Anyone Know This Car/ Buying A Cti

Recommended Posts

stumpyjag

I hope I have put this in the right place. But does anyone know of this car. Im sure a few of you have seen it for sale. Dont know alot about Cti's, as only ever had Gti's, but my wife has wanted one for twenty years so though I would treat her.

Any comments about the car or buying a Cti would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Dont know the car, but they are almost identical to GTI's. only things i would suggest checking is that the roof works, Check for cracks in the roof where it folds as they often split on the older cars. Also check the roof closes fairly tight, mine used to leak like niagra when i was at high speed in the rain, not great! Other than the roof, they are the same as GTI's

A lot have lower powered engines, and base spec chassis. Not quite a GTi

I stand corrected. Mine seemed the same as a GTI, always assumed i guess being a CTI that it was the same. Apologies - however the roof comment still stands :D

Am i right in thinking the power went upto 115bhp in 1986 so this one should be ok.

Apart from the front seats and the dashboard almost the entire interior is different to the gti including the carpet. Oh and yes it will have a 115bhp head/engine, well thats if its still a 1.6 and original engine mine turned out to be a 1.9

I know that Ade Sharpe (newish member on here) looked at this and passed on it - so best to drop him a PM regarding the specifics.

Oh and they have XS front suspension, raised ride height, scuttle shake you would expect from a 30 year old design and numerous other differences too - they are no GTI that is for sure. My 2 are totally different yet both have that great 205 feel to them.

After '86 did indeed get the 115bhp 1.6.

If you can find a good one with all the bits on it - buy it. The real issue is that rubber window/roof seals are impossible to get new and SH ones are hard to come by.

It's been a long time since I looked into this, but I was under the impression that the base model shell convertable was the CJ, not the CTi  but the XS suspension definitely rings a bell and a quick check of the parts catalogue shows that the CTi does not have the GTi suspension setup (I checked the wishbone which, apparently, only came on the GTi, Rallye and D Turbo, and the subframe where the CTi, apparently, has it's own exclusive version).

I do know that the CTi is heavier than the GTi though, by about 100kg iirc, as the shell has to be strengthened to make up for the lack of upper structural components (i.e. the roof).

Hi. Thanks for all the info, very helpful.

Anyone know how to get hold of Ade Sharp I have PM him but no reply. I offered the guy a lower price and he is interested but obviously if the car is no good I need to pull out.

I have PMd him on PSCUK too - it is Sharpe with an 'e' by the way just in case you missed this off.

Sorry for the delay in replying, was out all day yesterday. Was picking up lowered beam for my CTI that I'm currently working on. I've sent you a pm, with my thoughts on the car.

Any other questions about the car, just ask!

cheers.
