I think the "enthusiasts" is too all-encompassing, you only have to look at the money spent on top end race and rally and hillclimb 205's to see that, yes there's a lot of tired bodged examples out there too, its the nature of a cheap hot hatch.

I dread to think what AB's 8v stage rally car would have cost had he not been the owner of a rally prep company, or Colin Satchell's New hillclimber, without his skills and contacts.

Well I can, sort of, I know its very scary numbers to most on here who would probably turn their nose up at a 2k 1.6!

Good points, but I think AB and Sandy / Colin aren't really in the "enthusiast" end of the spectrum.. when I think of an enthusiast I think of someone who likes to own and run the car without taking anything too seriously; if you're going to compete at the top levels of a motorsport discipline then it's going to be very expensive no matter what you base the car on.

race cars are generally not in the 'enthusiast' category.

Colin spent around 70 hours labour on my 205 shell and quite frankly it needs a whole lot more to finish. My only saving grace is I can now get it done at work.

When I used the term "enthusiast" in my OP, I was basically referring to our members, since I tend to assume that anyone actively participating in this forum is an enthusiast ;)

I was about to ask what is a 'miser', then I googled it and came up with this,

'cheapskate, snipe-snout, penny pincher, piker, scrooge, skinflint, money grubber, tightarse or tightwad'

In short, no we are not.

Allye, it was a bit harsh of me to use the title 'Are all 205 Enthusiasts misers?'. It was a mistake, just like forgetting to add the question mark to the title  Obviously I actually meant some rather than all, but at least it got a reaction. Some members on here are definitely misers, it's indisputable ;)

In my honest opinion, a large part of what's happening is this... a few years ago, 205 bits were everywhere. No exaggeration there were five abandoned in my local area that I used to snaffle parts off. Not stealing mind you, either on private property with the owners consent, or abandoned at quarries, beaches etc.

Now? Well now there is just one specialist 205 breaker I know of, and his parts are far from cheap. I either man up, face the fact times have changed and appreciate the service he offers or quit 205 ownership and buy something less collectable with cheaper bits. I like the GTi. I'll pay the price.
