1360 Dilema....

Recommended Posts

Furyblade_Lee

Hi chaps. I have a dilema, I have a 100% rock solid 205 Open which visually apes a 205 Rallye now. I bought it to use with my 15 year old nephew in Autotesting and road rallying this past year. It has been really great fun and car has been reliable, and is on the button and ready to go this year when the season starts. BUT I really crave more power than the hp ( 75?) it produces currently but remaining at 1400cc's if possible, as he is now old enough to try sprinting in a 1400cc class. I have advertised it for sale on Pistonheads with regards to getting a 106 Rallye as a replacement, but my dilema is I really love it being a 205 and I doubt down the line I will get another 205 shell as clean easily.

What I think I would actually prefer is to tune this car to around 100bhp, or fit another 1.4 engine that makes 100 ish. Now I have seen the big thread regarding getting 100bhp from this engine, but being honest I am getting totally lost with the engine codes etc. being banded about!!! I am not up to speed on Pug speak yet!!! So could anybody reccomend me a shopping list of parts I need in laymans terms, places to buy, or a company in the south east who could carry out this work or do a drive / in out engine exchange service so I can weigh things up??

Thanks, Lee

I'm not sure what are the class rules/regulations, but something along the lines of a 205 Rallye 1.3 setup would get you up to 100 bhp,

meaning head work, wilder cam, twin 40's and a better exhaust. However, although we're on a 205 forum and you don't want to hear it,

I am going to suggest going for a mk1 106 Rallye as they have over 100 bhp out of the box (and that's on injection) and they can be

very competitive after some mild engine tuning and suspension upgrades .

As mentioned, there are Injected TU engines which are 100 bhp and under 1400cc, namely the 106 XSi, and the 106 Rallye.

I believe most RR regs state two chokes maximum, so no standard Euro rallye engines (twin 40 carbs) or ITB's.

A standard 106 rallye or an XSi is a good call, however will cost you a lot more to find a decent one than finding an engine for your 205, especially if as it sounds you have already put some time and money into it.

Yep, and I prefer the 205 to a 106 especially as they are getting rarer. So what do you rekon just a worked head, cam, exhaust (?) and twin choke carb would get me power wise and rough cost??

Easiest and cheapest way is probably just to fit a 106 1.4 XSi engine if the class rules allow, although you'll need to convert the fuel system to injection.

100hp odd out of the box, modernish engine management, and as I understand, a very good starting point if you want to tune further.

TU3S engine out of a 205 XS if you want to sprint, think there is one for sale on this forum.

I'll be competing in this class also, should be easy enough to get the engine up to 100bhp with some carbs, exhaust and a cam I would bet

its getting a bit harder to get 4-2-1 exhaust manifolds for the tu3s now, and inlet manifolds for twin carbs on them aren't hugely cheap unless you get a second hand one. so you might be better off with a more powerful engine to start with if you're on a budget.

having said that, there's few things in life better than ragging the tits off a tu3s.

If he wants to hillclimb then he needs to stick with a 205 engine or he'll be in sports libre with the radicals :(

i'm hoping to turbo my tu3s at some point :D

Stand to be corrected, but the 106 XSI and Rallye engines share the same blocks as 205 engines, cylinder head is free, however for road rallying most regs state only two chokes.

Single inlet shouldn't be a large hindrance to begin with though, but will limit how nice you can make it drive if you aim high.

An example of this is a C2 R2 rally car, standard inlet single throttle body on it due to regs, they make 180 bhp give or take, standard rods also, but nice light forged high comp pistons special profile cams and solid tappets.

I'd fit an injection engine if allowed, mine has one and I at least think its awesome..

No idea on the engine differences between 106 and 205 but it would be easy enough to get a tu3s to the same power and know it will be legal.

Cylinder head wise, if in road modified then the head needs to be from a 205, if in modified production then it can be anything, only the block needs to be 205. Mod-prod needs a cage though but slicks can be used.

to the OP, make sure whatever you do, you build it to the regulations of the motorsport you want to compete in, if you build it then look, you may be dissapointed to find you've spent money on building an illegal car :)

Yeah as above make sure you check your regs, i'll be putting a s1 106 rallye in mine to get that lovely 100hp. But 1 project at a time
