Bhp Conversion

Just a quick one which google doesnt seem to be very helpful with! I was just declaring my car mods to my insurance company and gave them my rolling road power which was at the wheels. However they calculate it all on bhp at flywheel which i know will be higher, does anyone know roughly how much power is lost between flywheel and wheels on a 205?

Thanks

Depends on various factors and hence there's not a standard percentage.

Isn't your engine to all intents and purposes standard? If so, just state standard power figures and go with that.

As a very vague rule I was told 15% for 2WD.

yea standard engine so i guess it is just easier to tell them its standard power. Was curious as much as anything else really, my policy allows me up to 180bhp so if the loss was around 15% then i would be over that at the flywheel so best leave it as is!

Thanks

Surely your rolling road results are estimated flywheel figures anyway given that it was 164hp?

Going by the customer's given BHP is backward.. it should be worked out from the mods. The cool weather can effect my car by 20 odd BHP (albeit a turbo). What are they going to do, rolling road it when it's stuck half way up a tree?!

Try a different insurer?

Im sure the bloke at the garage said it was an at the wheels figure but i will call and check. As far as im aware it is a standard 1.9 mi that had a rebuild about 3000 miles ago, all i have done is fit a stainless exhaust and shortened inlet manifold and induction hose so i guess that would have increased the power a bit.

As far as changing insurer i have no need, they have been helpful all the way through and were by far the cheapest quote

As said, it'll be a flywheel figure - it just isn't conceivable that it's an at the wheels figure (unless the rollers are massively inaccurate!)

Think about it - 1.9 Mi16 (non-CAT) has a book figure of 160hp, and thus a "good" example and/or a bit of rolling road inaccuracy would easily account for 4hp odd.

164hp at the wheels would be more like 185-190hp at the flywheel, and that's more what you'd expect from an Mi16 with a mild cam and throttle bodies.
