Dead Battery

Recommended Posts

john-melbourne

Hi Guys,

Went to start the CTI today after not running th car for a couple of months, the battery was completely flat, got a set of jump leads and the car started first time, left it running by itself for about 20 minutes and stalled it :) battery was completely flat. Does this mean the battery is dead?, is it worth getting a charger or just wait and get a new battery?

Thanks Guys

John

get multimeter and check voltage accross battery when running - should be around 13.8/13.9 for a healthy alternator. if it is, then battery dead

You'll need to test the CCA, cold cranking amps, too. Take it to any decent motorfactor and they will test it for free and tell you if it's dead or not.

Sounds like dead battery then. Alternator is keeping the current up but battery not holding charge.

Is it worth getting a battery charger or just getting a new battery? Battery doesnt look that old, its a halfords one though, are they any good?

Halfrauds buy their batteries from a company in Birmingham, and just stick their sticker on them - the company also makes batteries for many other companies, so the quality differences of them are somewhat negligible. I am guessing you don't have a multimeter? Its pointless buying anything else TBH before you check if its charging enough from the alternator. get it running, drive to a local garage, ask them to check the voltage the alternator is giving, (by measuring the voltage across the battery when running) if its 13.5 or less then I would suggest that's too low to charge the battery - dead alternator. if its around 13.9 then that's a healthy alternator and a dead battery.

Even brand name batteries such as Varta can easily and completely fail after only 2-3 years.
