Whistle Sound When Going Over Bumpers

Recommended Posts

omri617

Hi again :)

Recently I ask a lot of questions , I know (Car is back on the road almost)

When i drive , no matter the speed , i hear some kind of whistles . Mainly when i drive over bumpers or a bad road or anything.

I had this problem in the past , and it turned to be the pistons that hold the hatch. I disconnected them , but it wasn't it.

What could it be??

Thanks :)

Dampers sometimes make a "whooshing" noise, but when I've had this on any car in the past it's usually when under a big compression, and at a speed slow enough that you can hear it, for example negotiating a speed bump or at the bottom of a steep ramp like you'd find in a multi-storey car park. Not something I'd expect to notice at any speed on the road.

Opened the hatch door today , and bumped the car down few times , didn't hear any whistles that i complain about.

doesn't that mean that it's probably not bad dampers?

Does the sound come from the front or the rear?

I've had that happen on two cars (whistle from the rear, that is) - once it was the hatch and the other time it was the rear beam.

I think from the back..

How to check if it's the rear beam? any way i can test it?

Could be the front antiroll bar moving inside its worn bushes? Mine doesnt whistle but it makes a strange undescribable noise when i go over bumps/potholes and you can hear it all over the car but you can tell its coming from underfoot. Check for play there?

Put the car in gear, choc up the wheels.

Release the handbrake.

Open the boot.

Jump/bump up and down on the lower edge of the boot opening.

Wait and see..........

OK then, jack the car up and try to wobble the rear wheels to check if there's any play in the trailing arms.

Make sure you dont jack it up by the rear beam/arms tho or the above will be pointless use the sill with a chog of wood to protect it

I jack it at the rear in the jacking points by 2 jacks - left and right.

right?

Yes the trailing arms need to move freely so you can test them for plat
