Gti-6 Tickover

On start-up the tickover is around 900-1k rpm. When slowing down to a stop (junctions etc) the revs are ofter circa 1500-1700. If I release the clutch to the bite point, the revs drop back to circa 1k and all is sweet. Any suggestions to the root cause of this?
