Which Turbo For Around 250Hp

Recommended Posts

carlh.1

Would a t 28 struggle to be able to produce 250hp maybe more on a gti 6 engine?

Or would it be starting to run out of puff? I dont want to big of a turbo so it has loads of lag as at the minute the 8v tt with t25 has no lag at all at 200hp

I dont know to much about trim or a.r so any info would be a great help,

Also do these dp compression plates really work reliably or am i better going forged pistons?

cheers carl

I was looking on a website that did dp kit think it was pug speed or something like that and they told you what bhp you could expect from the turbos they offer I think the gt2851rs was a good choice

If you are aiming at only 250 and don't want any lag then a Lynx supercharger kit would be one of your easiest options and a fair amount cheaper than a turbo setup.

The half a bar or so they run on a totally standard gti6 engine will get you between 240 and 260 bhp, shows how poor the 8v turbo is when that's 150 bhp from half a bar!

The thing is welsh i have already got the boost piping intercooler, emerald ecu, a t28 turbo, so turbo routes the way i want to go, making the manifold and downpipe shouldnt be to hard with a bit of thought.

Plus how many 1000 is it for the lynx kit?

Then its just rebuild bottom end with forged pistons, dont tgink i need rods if i keep it under 300 horse do i? Then get it remapped.

Would a t28 get me anywhere close to 300?

There are lots of gt28's from the famous disco potato to the one I have gt2871r designed for a sr20det. They often see 350 hp so i would say its good for 300 no problem. If you keep it to 240hp you could do it with the standard gti6 bottom end just like the supercharged boys. Good luck.

GT28's are not the same as T28's.

A T28 from a Pulsar is capable of pushing 300bhp @ 1 bar boost. T28's from other Nissan a little less.

If you aim at 250bhp, you could also take td04 with 13G wheel or bigger. They tend spool a little bit faster. (or td05 if you target at 300bhp).

Keep the compression standard for a 250hp target.

a gt28 will work well and give you the ability to push more power at later on.

Make sure you have a good well positioned intercooler to keep charge temps low.

thanks

James

Wracing its not a gt 28 its a t28 of a fiat coupe 20v t so probably not as big as a gt28,

The td series seem cheaper to buy then garrett, i take it there not bb internals?

Is a 16g td05 to big if i aim for 300hp

are the engines that well built that they can handle nearly 90hp on standard internals?

IMO T series turbo's are old and laggy. GT series are much better in terms of lag and flow. I've bought a GT2559V for my 205 which I'm hoping to get fitted soon.

Gt2860rs is your best option if you want 300 to 350 bhp.

However if you just going for 250 bhp the T25 dependant on what spec it is will give you 250 all day long but will stuggle to give you anything more.

If you really want to splash out go for the Gtx2860r retails at around £ 1150 all in.T28 will also do 250 and go up to 300 to 325 at a push that also depends on what spec T28 you get.

Thanks for all the advice, this is what stage im up to with the mock up of the engine, i have decided to go for the td05 16g.

Will the cossi cooler be able to keep the charge cool for 300hp, also will mk2 focus rs injectors fit the standard rail and have enough cc of flow for 300hp i belive they are around 440 ish?

Interesting!! Mine is pretty much the same but a td04-16t, cossie intercooler and green injectors, but i think my injectors are only 270cc (green top but a titanium colour body)

Id also like to know if the intercooler is up to 300hp!

Orite peter, might pick your brains for ideas, how have you gone about your exhaust manifold, this is what i have gone far with a link pipe to the turbo like the pug 1 off yellow turbo monster was like and lookly the subaru down pipe with a bit of modification works a treat.

I had 360cc injectors in my 8v turbo and dave walker at emerald said they where getting close to max when it was at 210hp

How are you going about your coolant expansion bottle, can you keep yours in standard place, because im struggling for space

shows how poor the 8v turbo is when that's 150 bhp from half a bar!

Having had a TurboCT XM for seven years, I'm going to leap to the defence of that rather misunderstood lump... It was never intended to produce fantastic horsepower figures - that's just not the point of it. Look at the badge for a clue - Constant Torque. A big, fat torque curve, no real peak, just a lazy shove in the back without having to rev the furry little nadgers off it. It suits a big, heavy wafty car like the XM very nicely. If they'd been trying to produce a high-numbers screamer, they wouldn't have started with the 8v... B'sides, with the v6 also available, that just wasn't needed.

sans-titre-2--27ba702.jpg

To do that, the compression ratio was kept high, and the boost managed in a similar way to Saab's APC, bleeding boost off when pinking's detected. It's often referred to as a low-pressure turbo, but it isn't - the wastegate's set relatively high, the electronics just don't allow the use of it most of the time, only enough to help bolster that mid-range torque.

I've never owned a Xant or 406 with the TCT lump, but from just having a good look over them, the boost plumbing's much more compromised, due to trying to squeeze it into an engine bay that's really too small.

i put all the runners around the side of the block very close to the thermostat housing that i them modified to all aluminium as the gti6 is plastic, I couldnt really get the turbo any closer to the head, and iv still had to angle my header tank to clear the dowmpipe. Quite a mission!!

Theres a few pics in my thread in engine work (budget laser green 16v turbo)

So your car is on an emerald?

Can any body give me some advice on my expansion bottle is it going to be too near the exhaust downpipe, if so what ideas do you have for where to put it? most componants are in place now so this is the room im left with.

Sorry for the small pictures not sure how to put them on bigger

Cheers carl.

Thought i would put a couple of pictures on of the engine in its new home,

Could anyone in the know tell me if the cossy cooler will be good for cooling 300hp? With hopefully around 18 psi

cheers carl

For your expansion tank why not put a 106 radiator in it or similar which has a expansion tank built into the rad. Gets around your issues nicely.

I personally think you're asking alot of the intercooler if it's gonna get some hammer, depends what you're using the car for though?

What exhaust manifold is that? Looks like standard turned upside down with a single pipe to turbo ... Looks interesting :)

Thanks for the replys,

Rally, i think i have sorted the tank problem im going with a 2litre ally tank with a heat shield around it, its around 3 inch awat from the down pipe so hopefully be ok?

Allan, your probably right, the car is a road car and track car so will be getting some pain. The 8v turbo engine i had before this was 200hp at 11psi with the inlet temps on track staying around 22C, this engines going to be running higher boost so higher inlet temps,

What cooler have you got on yours and where abouts have you mounted it?

Orite Aaron, its a standard 6 manifold cut into its bends then re glued to avoid the heater matrix pipework, then into a colector and link pipe to the turbo, i got the idea from matts yellow gti 6 beast

Mines supercharged and only runs around 8psi so quite a bit different really. Here's mine from when I mocked it up on a scrap shell.

http://www.universal-intercoolers.co.uk/Fitted%20Examples/Display.php?car=Peugeot%20205

The cossie coolers are apparently very good but it's defo a bit small for constant hi boost pressure I'd say.

I was having a look for a larger cooler last nite, ideally I want one with the outlets in the same area, if not I'll have to add around a metre of boost piping, would that make a difference in lag?

Uprated cossy coolers are all huge around RS500 size which just won't fit behind the valance and grill, I'll have to keep hunting.

How wide was yours Allan? If I could get one a 150mm less in length I can make that work.
