Older 205's - 1983/1984

I am, at the moment, based in the good ol' Republic of Ireland which, unlike the UK, has a rolling system of classic cars which means, as of January 1st, you'll be able to drive any car built prior to 1983 as a classic with the grand total road tax of 52 euro a year.

(...in perspective my current Mi16 costs me 800 euro a year)

As you can imagine, this makes things a bit interesting as it means, as of next year, that you can even drive a good ol' early 1984 GTi on classic tax.

The 1983 only came in a 5dr yeah? :) Would've been fun to pick up a nice three door beater from '83, throw the Mi16 into it and go have some fun on the cheap ;)

Anyone got an '83/'84 gathering dust behind their shed then? :)

...that's nothing, the rx7 outside is 1500... So if anyone has an '83 GR or an '84 GTi let me know :)

I hope fuel costs far less than it does here

... don't worry, I'm sure the UK will catch up eventually, although maybe not, your prime minister doesn't earn more than Barack Obama like ours does :)

None for sale then? :)

In fairness, I have an early eighties, Renault engined old 205 with various weeds growing through it in the back garden and the way they rust as opposed to the later cars is, erm, exciting to behold so I'm not entirely surprised there's none of the '84 GTi's left. The only reference I can find to one is an old thread dating back two years to a silver one that has meltingly good levels of rust and has long since hit Pistonheads.

Such is life.

If anyone comes across an early 'un, do post here though as I'd love to pick one up for budget and comedy fast motoring.

Someone on here used to have a dark grey or black 1984 GTI.

But how would you class that as "prior to 83" anyway?

Ah Cybernck, since the earliest days I've posted here you've been confused by the internet :P:D What I mean is, because good ol' Ireland is on a rolling system, it would probably make the most sense to pick up an '84, pray they don't change or freeze the system, and spend the next few months tweaking and fettling it so that it's ready to roll as a classic in January '84.

Picture a 205 GTi kicking up pebbles, WRC style, around the Ring of Kerry at 6am, swings sideways into a luxury resort and the owner jumps out, pops the lock, and smiles at the owner of the 750iL who's scowling at him and says "52 euro a year to tax", before walking off to the pub leaving it ticking and pinging... :)

...spotted that one, thought it was a bit on the steep side given some of the quite frankly f^%king amazing projects that pop up here from time to time. The Honda engined 309 a personal favourite.

I will keep an eye in the North for you, but there is never many before 1988 for sale, from what I see. Where abouts are you in Ireland, down near Kenmare/Killarney direction, since you mentioned the ring of Kerry?

That's a serious disability. If you were in Ireland and you worked in the civil service, you'd probably get an extra six grand a year, counselling training to face your fear of italics, and an intern.

I'll let you off with it this time but only because you're a f^%king legend :) Haven't been posting much due to legal reasons but I've been keeping a very close eye on the Mi32. And also posting links to it to friends of mine who own Civic VTECs who think a carbon intake is the definition of modified.

"This is what modifying without a Blitz catalogue looks like"

Actually based waaay down South in Wexford. I can see Wales from my house on a sunny day if I squint.

I wouldn't be so sure that's m84, probably a private plate with an 84 suffix on a younger car.

There'll be a frenzy of cars claiming classic status in ireland over the coming few years.

Those twin cams will sky rocket in value again id say if there is any straight ones left.

My grey 205 is an 84 shell and is holding out very well rust wise, every panel is fiberglass yes but the chassis is excellent. Can't see plates ever going back on it though.

Shame it's so hard to give a 205 a new identity.....

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not :P but from the look of some of the photographs it looks like there could be a fair bit of old rust lurking beyond the photographed spots. Don't think I've ever seen one with a front screen surround looking that flakey:)

Agreed. It's quite interesting, actually, in terms of running a cheap daily driver. There's lots of options out there in the '84/'84 bracket where you could buy a nice motor in England for very little, drive it in Ireland for 52e a year. My thoughts especially go towards some of the slightly mental project cars you could build, eg.. Mk1 Fiesta with a 145bhp 1L Ecoboost engine :) Lots of (albeit boring) grunt and about 60mpg in the one package :D

Shame it's so hard to give a 205 a new identity.....

I think we've all probably done something slightly dodgy in the past, no tax, no MOT/NCT, undeclared mods... it's amazing how it can take the fun out of owning something as you rock up to Gardai/Police checkpoints. I just don't have the personality for that stuff really but I could definitely see the advantage of picking up a nice '94 shell and getting the angle grinder out if you had the stomach for it, I don't ;)
