My First Engine Swap - The Results!

Recommended Posts

starky5

Well a couple of weeks ago i did my first ever engine swap and it went alright, a few little errors on my front like ordering the wrong clutch twice!

Anyway its now been on the road a couple of weeks and ive sorted a couple of little teething issues so i thought it was time to get it on my local rolling road to check it was running alright and see what power i had managed! The engine ive put in is a 1.9 alloy mi16 with a re-angled exhaust manifold and shortened inlet manifold, Baker BM shortened induction hose and a cone filter on the end of the AFM. The exhaust i had made by a local garage its a power flow 2 box system with the tail pipe being bent down to look standard.

Now in my head i thought i would be happy with 150 bhp but thought it might be more like 140 bhp being and old engine, however it made 164.6 bhp!!! Im over the moon with this and it made the stress during the swap worth while!

Just wanted to share this with someone really!

Excellent :) get some pictures up! It'd be interesting to see a RR print out with the shorted inlet, see what it's done to the torque!

Glad to hear that you it finished after the headaches along the way and that you're happy with the result :D

I have a picture of the RR print out, not sure how well you can see it but it made 122.3 lbft of torq. Its the blue line going right across, the dotter lines are the power run i had done with my 1.9 8v before i started!

Ill get pictures of the car once the bloody rain stops! haha

Whilst that 8v might not have been the finest example judging by the results (although probably not that unusual), you can't really argue with that as a pretty convincing arguement for a 16 valver - pretty much identical upto ~4700rpm save for a small flatspot and then it just leaves the 8v behind :)

The rpm readout on the Mi16 plot looks a little suspect though judging from the peak rpm figure.

yea the 8v did have 197000 miles behind it but the head was rebuilt 25000 miles ago. Yea i thought that, i gave it some beans on the way home and im sur it hit the limiter at 7000 rpm?!

Im really pleased to have gained a large amount of power but still have such a driveable car!

This. The whole "8 valve's have more torque" argument is just silly. Few engines beat a good D6C in my opinion. The RFS is more powerful and better mannered, but it doesn't have the eagerness of it's older sibling.

Sure. We have absolved that myth many many years ago on this forum :).

the mi16 is a cracking motor and not really affected by miles,i had my old one rolling roaded at nearly 150k and it was putting out 159.5 bhp,the only plus to the gti6 is the far better management imo oh and the 7 bhp extra that it needs to lug around that big heavy block :D

fitting the gti6 in mine though as decent mi's are becoming scarce and a bit pricey to rebuild

great results though and bet it goes well compared to the 8v,well done

Don't believe the rev counter in a 205 GTI, they aren't always exactly accurate.

Nice work Andrew, glad its worked out & you're happy how its ended up.

Your car looked good when i saw it in September on Old Fools, now it has the power to match the looks, top results all round. :D

Good work! Time to enjoy it! :D

Mine too, in fact 3 of my 8v's definitely makes more torque than a D6C or an RFS...:lol:

Mi16's are still King XU 16v though...
