205 Mi16 Rebuild

Recommended Posts

gretsch-drummer

Now then, firstly I'm writing this project up on behalf of a friend whos build it is. A few of us are giving a helping hand with the build.

Right, bit of background on the car. My friend bought it with the Mi16 conversion already done, the shell was a little rough around the edges but not too bad. But a couple/few hundred miles later the headgasket went in nice cloud of smoke. This brought him onto the idea of rebuilding the whole lot and making it into a fast road/track car.

Now onto the pictures:

This is how it looked (the engine bay, no full car pics) before a mate gave a hand on removing the engine:

Then:

Then a few of us got started on stripping the whole lot ready for a mates dad to weld in a roll-cage:

You'll probably notice the welded sunroof but he later found a non-sunroof skin which gets welded on later.

Soaking up some 'rays:

Then he had a spending spree on a few trick bits:

Fully stripped and cleaned engine:

Non sunroof skin:

Then a welded roof skin and respray later......we have this:

He then took it to his rented garage and we went down and stripped the rest of the gubbins off, i.e rear beam, fuel tank and subframe. The car is completely stripped so now we are going to spend a while under the car tackling the rust and then crack on undersealing it.

I've now rebuilt a 309 beam he wanting rebuilding so after the undersealing that'll be whacked on along with the front subframe I'll be rubbing down and painting.

Cheers.

Vili

Where did you get those cylinder liners and how much were they? Are those std. bore?

And do you have any pictures of the roof skin replacement?

The are not "ribbed" like standard ones though.

Vili, I'll ask my mate where he got them done and how much.

Cybernck, I'm not clued up on 205 engines really (I'm more into paintwork myself) So I've not got a reply.

But we have been working on the car over the past week or so stripping it down and rust-gelling it ready for undersealing:

Not the widest work space, but we get by:

Should get it undersealed in the next week or so. Then it'll be time to put the fuel tank, beam and subframe back on.

I'm wanting to do it white but we can't find anything in the shops. We can only find aerosols of white stone chip.

Is hammerite underseal paintable?

Is there anything impractically wrong with black underseal? or just the colour?
