Sump Plug

Recommended Posts

jonb_5

Trying to remove the sump plug tonight to do an oil change and it is stuck fast.

Using a piece of 8mm bar with a socket on and have just rounded off the bar...

I am going to buy a proper tool from halfords tomorrow, just wondering if I should heat it up or anything first in-case I round off the tool?

Also, do halfords sell replacement plugs as I am going to replace it while it is out.

Thanks

Jon

Heat plus a sump full of oil probably isn't a good idea.

8mm tool is correct.

No idea if Halfords sell spare plugs, give them a call.

The square drive in the centre shouldn't round off that easily if its fully seated home with a proper sump plug tool.

With the oil up to temp for the change it should help but if you do use extra heat, be careful when you loosen it or just crack it off & let it cool down a bit more before removing it.

Also not sure about halfords but my local motor factors used to have sump plugs in stock, even ones with a magnet on for under £3 iirc.

The proper tool should get it off, Halfords did used to sell the plug and washer as a kit.

I find it really annoying that they made it with a square drive to begin with.

I bought a sump plug and washer from halfrauds recently but was in their reduced section so maybe they were an end of line item. Definitelly worth a try.

Using the proper 8mm square tool i've never rounded off a tight sump plug....yet!
