Tu24 With Vernier Pulley - Cambelt Change

Recommended Posts

205Rallee

I've read the Haynes manual but I'm not sure if you can lock the timing pulley in place wiith the non standard pulley. Also I've a non standard flywheel. Don't want to cock it up! Any advice?

Also should I change the water pump, is it easy to do?

How do I get the correct tension on the cam belt?

Many thanks.

You could just mark the pulleys and the belt, then transfer the markings on the old belt over I the new one.

I always replace the water pump when fitting a new belt. Saves hassle later on!

Tighten it up so you can just about twist the belt 90 degrees by hand...if that makes sense :P

Ah never thought about just marking them up!

Off to get a belt, tensioner and waterpump tomorrow. I've a brand new boxed Pug cambelt but it's probably 5 years old. So do I go and buy a new one from the Pug Dealer or just get a Gates or SKF kit? Any idea which water pumps are any good?

The gates and skf kits are as good as any other belt in my opinion make same with waterpumps any aftermarket will do the job just as good as a genuine One

It's normally a gates or dayco belt in the genuine kits. Best to price the genuine kit from Peugeot first and see what deal they can do on it and then maybe try a motor factors for a "like for like" kit. Just watch the Motorfactors though, as I have seen a few people get caught out and pay more at the Motorfactors lately, because they automatically thought they would be cheaper than the dealer. Peugeot over the last year or so have reduced a lot of their belt kits and clutch kits to 'compete' with the Motorfactors and you might get lucky.

Motaquip water pumps aren't bad either and your local Peugeot garage can get certain motaquip parts direct from Peugeot for you. I wouldn't trust a cheap Chinese copy water pump myself.

Richard, took your advice and tried another Pug Dealer in Cumbria (not the usual one I use but an identical experience). Are they all as bad as the one's we have in Cumbria? The customer experiece is awful. Try being helpful by giving them the correct parts number and they immediately become unpleasant and look as disinterested as is humanly possible. Go through the massive list of 3 parts and they do some huge mathmatics working out how much they can shaft me as a retail punter, then it turns out there's nothing in stock, "Nobody keeps anything for 205's anymore". BUT Peugeot do! Gave up and went and bought Gates and SKF stuff down the local motorfactor.

If Pug were ever to bring out a decent GTi I would be really keen to buy one but Peugeot seem to have lost the plot with their cars and dealers.

Ah not so good!! I don't know if they are all bad, but myself and another fella that we have had as a parts guy for 20 years would be more switched onto the older stuff and take the time. Our other place gives me or him a buzz if they're stuck. Probably didn't help when they don't understand what a TU 24 rallye is. Good to hear that you got sorted with parts in the end though. If in future your having problems with sourcing parts give me a buzz and I'll see what I can do on the genuine/motaquip side of things. Only thing is, I'm over in N.Ireland and if I can get them it, would be the postage and time delay, as they supply from coventry, but if they could be done at a trade price it might be work out alright. Same goes for anyone on here, that may be having some problems with "chassi number only" parts people, I'll see what I can do.

The old timing belt was a Gates one (the engine builder had installed it with the arrows pointing the wrong way), the water pump was SKF and the tensioner IMA. No locking pin holes in the Kent Vernier cam sprocket or in the billet flywheel, so I used the Tippex idea .

The cam belt was 5 years old(oops) but only about 10,000miles. The water pump dated back to 1999 and had a slight weep. The tensioner had some slack in it.

I can see how the experts could do this in about 10 minutes, I took my time an gave everything a clean up and it took me about 3 hours, bet no one has taken longer!

Thaks for the offer re the genuine Peugeot stuff, will drop you a line next time I'm after something obscure.... so that will be January.

Merry Xmas

Started it up today ran it up to temperature, bled the cooling system, checked the cam belt tension and all ok.

Could do with a new top hose that goes between the heater and the water punp, the one that has the bleed screw at the highest point. Its specific to the TU24 and servicebox says Ne fait pas :( There is a company called Venair that makes a full set for the TU24, but they only seem to be off the shelf in blue and don't really want to spend £200 on hoses I don't need.....

Is it possible to make up a hose with a combination of joints and bends from this crowd here?

http://www.viperperformance.co.uk/

I've used them before inthe past and had excellent service. They do aluminium jointers with the proper ridge at the end to hold the hoses on. The classic black hoses they do are supposed to be non shiney and look oem (I haven't used them though). If you put the jointers in tight then you would only see a black hose, and then use some tidy hose clips like these, http://www.wurth.co.uk/product/screwlesshoseclip So that it is neat and doesn't look odd with a lot of jubilee clips together.

Or they might custom make you a hose for reasonable money, so maybe worth a phone call and some pics to them to see what they think?

That's really helpful. Will go and see them at Race Retro with some of the original pipes!
