Horn Stopped Working

Recommended Posts

omri617

Hi there , the horn doesn't work for some time now ,

Took it out and connected directly to battery : Works.

Checked with an indication lamp if it's leads get any power : None

Sprayed the earth , sprayed the 2 relays ( one is green and one is purple - which one is it? ) : None

Fuses seem all to work ( it shares the fuse of the lighter , right? )

What can i do now ? how to check if the Relays are working or not?

thanks!

Simes

Horn switch.

Test that you can hear the relay clicking, these switches are starting to fail. Second hand ones (I've found) also seem to be unreliable ( intermittent)

Is your car a 1.6 or 1.9 GTI?

Fuses seem all to work ( it shares the fuse of the lighter , right? )

I'm not sure if the fusebox layout differed for non uk cars that much but all the fuse lists I have show the horn sharing the fuse with the heated rear window through fuse #8 with post 1991 models having the cigarette lighter on the same fuse so it will depend on the year of your car.

You could remove the column stalk & bridge the relevant pins on the plug to check the rest of the circuit & relays out & see if the horn works.

1.6 or 1.9?

The 1.9 has a relay for the compressor but I'm not sure which relay it'll be.

Look at the wires into the plug for wire #24 or 24A, if you find them, that's the horn relay.

The 1.6 is wired directly to the horn from the fuse box, at least none of my diagrams show it having a relay.
