Friend's Renault Megane Coupe 1998 Stuck In My Garage

Recommended Posts

omri617

Hi there , A friend came to me today with this Megane Coupe 1998.

He disconnected the battery for few minutes and after connecting it back , the car didn't turn on anymore. there is this round red light that keeps flashing (normally it flashed few times and then turned off)

We tried a lot of things, disconnecting the battery again , waiting hours and hours. still nothing.

there is a spark and the starter turns but car doesn't. \

What went wrong?

My girlfriends old Clio had the same issue. I looked up the icon that is illuminated on the far right of your picture. It was something to do with the immobiliser. Hers turned over but didn't spark. I locked and unlocked the car again with the fob and it worked fine.

U mean the orange lighted one ?

The key fob in his car is not working , there was a mess with his car and he disconnected all things related to the alarm system

The one that bothers us , is the flashing red dot

The flashing red dot is the immobiliser light, it should flash when the immobiliser is armed and come on solid then go out when the ignition is turned on. If its flashing constantly while cranking or the when the ignition is on it indicates an immobiliser problem in which case your going to need the renault diagnostic software to find whats wrong.

ONLY ONE WAY TO FIX THIS,TOW IT OUT TO THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE AND SET IT ON FIRE :ph34r:
OR YOU COULD TAKE IT TO RENAULT AND LET THEM RE-PROGRAMME YOUR IMMOBILISER FOB AND GIVE YOUR FRIEND A GOOR ASS RAPING IN THE PROCESS

WHAT EVER POSSESES PEOPLE TO BUY THESE CARS THEY ARE JUST UTTER s*itE,I DONT THINK RENAULT MAKE MUCH SELLING CARS BUT THE DEALERS MUST BE KEPT ALIVE THESE DAYS REPROGGRAMMING KEY FOBS AND SORTING IMMOBILISER FAULTS ON ALL OF THEIR OLDER CARS

I USED TO DO RECOVERY AND THE PERCENTAGE OF RENAULTS OUT OF MY JOBS WAS AT LEAST 40% 25% CLIOS AND THE OTHER 15 % ASSORTED RENAULTS,IF HE GETS RID TELL HIM NOT TO BUY ANOTHER RENAULT AND HE MIGHT WANT TO STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING RANGE ROVER TOO AS THEY ARE TERRIBLE N'ALL

With the immobiliser light if it flashes fast then it is a key fault,if it was on constantly then it is a fault with the immobiliser,is the key infra red?

And Renaults really arnt as bad as some other crap on the road

There is an emergency bypass for these in which you have to enter a 4 digit code using the central locking button, but you would still have to contact renault for it. Try ringing your local renault dealer and explain whats happened and see if they will give you the immobiliser bypass code as you need to drive the car to get to them. But no matter what its still going to need dealer software to reprogramme it.

Just to add you can check the key if its an infra-red one by pointing it at a mobile phone camera and pressing it, should make the screen flash.

the code as mentioned above can be put in yourself if it is an infra red key,you put it in using the central locking button and counting the flashes on the immobiliser light,i can explain the procedure if you are able to get a code

I came across this situation when I used to work at a car lot and we sold a megane classic, after a few days the guy came back saying the car wouldnt start and that he'd changed the fob battery. After a lot of ringing around. The AA/RAC can get access to your code, so if you know a nice aa/rac man who would like a nice drink you will be able to start the car at least. It will only last until the car is locked again then next entry you will have to enter the code again. With the immobiliser unlocked you can make the car re-learn the fobs code. Dont even think of going to renault without a grand!

what a bummer

We have the code from Renault , but it wouldn't work. maybe it was changed over the years..?

Did your local dealer tell you how to enter the code then?

As for budgeting a grand at a dealers, the dealers i worked at would have charged half an hour to an hours labour plus parts (whatever they turned out to be),most likely the key or receiver faulty. If you took it to a dealers and the parts were going to be really expensive i would just pay the diagnostic fee then take the car away and sent the ecu away to have the immobiliser removed.

It was a few years ago now but the sequence is something like open the car get in shut door key in ignition on activate the central locking button in the car 10 times locks will flick up and down rapidly to confirm code entry mode then press lock to enter the code digits 1 by 1 the light will flash once after each digit entry after the last one is entered the locks should operate rapidly again and the light will go out if its correct. Its a similar way to do the remote but ive forgotten how

Tried lot of times, could the code have been changed through the years? or this code is unchangeable?

Could of had a replacement ecu then. Is the ecu accepting the code you are entering? (Locks rapid firing or do they stay dormant)

I would imagine the code is unchangeable
