Sunroof Removal

I'm wanting to remove the full length sunroof on my GTI, I've taken the plastics off and the torx screws from around the edge and the two hex nuts from behind the handle/interior light. Are there other screws etc that need taking out, does the headlining need taking off?

Just removing the glass, or removing the complete assembly?

 

The glass is straight forward enough - you'll need to remove the stops from the rear of the rails (just in front of the boot - a torx bolt on each side) and you'll also need to remove the handle from the glass. With that done, it just slides off backwards.

 

Removing the complete assembly is a bit more involved and needs lots of rivets drilling out AFAIK, and yes, the headlining needs to come out as well.

The glass is straight forward enough - you'll need to remove the stops from the rear of the rails (just in front of the boot - a torx bolt on each side) and you'll also need to remove the handle from the glass. With that done, it just slides off backwards.

 

Removing the complete assembly is a bit more involved and needs lots of rivets drilling out AFAIK, and yes, the headlining needs to come out as well.

I'd like to take the whole unit off, is the headlining easy to remove and replace?

The headlining on the factory sunroof models is simple enough to remove as there's not much adhesive, and once that's out, the frame that supports the sliding cover/blind for the sunroof can then be removed - from memory, it's just two screws per side, that go in from above (sort of in each corner off the roof apature).

 

Non-sunroof (and thus aftermarket sunroof cars) are rather more difficult to remove the headlining from in one piece, as there's much more adhesive and hence you'll need to be slow and patient to get it off in one piece without creasing or damaging it.
