Bench Testing The Coolant Level Gauge?

Recommended Posts

ALEX

The old float type coolant level gauge.

I figured that If I connected a multimeter at the terminals I'd get a different contnuity reading when tilting the float.

I'm getting no reading....Is it broken?

If so are these like hens teeth?

Easy enough to test.

Put it in a glass of water (to simulate normal coolant level), and the two terminals should be open circuit.

Remove it from the glass (to simulate low/no coolant), and the two terminals should make a circuit.

Sounds like yours is broken, which is very common.

Still available from Peugeot for around £35, or try your luck with 2nd hand ones.

Just read through that,

I cleaned it out by shaking it in hot water and loads of silt came out of it.

I'll soak it in WD40 like Graham said and try again.

If still I get no reading I might have a go and repair it, as money is getting tight near chrismas 'n all.

Anyone know if you can buy the same reed switch from Maplins or RS?

How did you get the base off?

Can't remember , was a few years ago when i opened this ...

But , as far as i remember , the reed switch is inside the sender stuffed in the centre with some kind of filler (sealant/putty ..) and complete assembly is then plastic sealed . So , once opened you wont be able to seal it back again .

Anyhow , all the 205 and 309 coolant senders are the same .. so , scrapyard find might be best ..
