Moved Piston Liner?

Recommended Posts

dantheman

Hi,

I have recently bought a 1.6 engine without head. The second piston liner from the gearbox is very slightly rotated out of sinc with the others. Is this going to be a problem or can I go with it? The markings on the pistons (dist->) i assume should be pointing the other way??

Thanks

It might not have moved at all, I've stripped engines like that before which had no probllems.

Gently check if you can wobble that liner at all (nothing to severe) but for the price of a sump gasket, 4 x liner seals & time to do it, you'd be as wise to replace them if yo have any doubt imo.

Thanks Graham, its dead tight and was available because the owner upgraded to MI16. I bought it through a friend of a friend who said it was running sweetly!

It is only to get me by until my existing engine is rebuilt :D

And "dist" should be pointing towards the cambelt end of the engine, NOT the distributor end.

Yep

Made that mistake myself.

Still living with the grief 8 years on with my mate telling everyone that I put the pistons in the wrong way round in his engine.

Sounds like an obvious mistake like they were put in upside down or something, so now everyone thinks I know F**k all about engines....

Which is true really

"Distribution" is what the french call the timing end. I think every English speaking person makes the same mistake the first time thinking it means distributor! Also, the french number the cylinders 1-4 in the opposite way to everyone else!

Not worth the cost of having to do the job again. Be careful with the bearings with cleanliness and inspect them and use them again but change the liner seals if there's any doubt that they have moved. I had filled my sump with water after a very long top end rebuild on an xu7 engine. New parts needed then are new oil, new anti freeze, head-gasket, bolts and doing all the work you have just done again is a real heart breaker. Change the seals.
