dave205 19 Posted December 2, 2012 Whats the best way of checking the condition of a rear beam? To insure its not seized, worn, accident damaged etc?
Tom Fenton 1,536 Posted December 2, 2012 Strip it. Anything else is just guesswork.
welshpug 1,646 Posted December 2, 2012 As tom said, that is the only way to asses its condition. Alignment wise accident damage tends to be rather obvious, the stub axles bend far sooner than a trailing arm, I think one or two here have experienced bent crossmembers, which takes some doing! dave205 19 Posted December 2, 2012 Thats another job to add to the to do list then. I'll strip it down and see!
dave205 19 Posted January 4, 2013 Finally stripped my gti beam down tonight :/, 2 hours work for nothing by the looks of it. I'll add some pictures later, when im at a computer.
jord294 89 Posted January 4, 2013 We've all been there pal. It's always a gamble knowing what you'll find.
kee 22 Posted January 4, 2013 it's better to strip it down and find it doesn't need work then having to give it a full rebuild or replace altogether
dave205 19 Posted January 4, 2013 pics: not sure if its visible but you can see just about see the end of the tube is bent, from accident damage. Nice pile of scrap!!
welshpug 1,646 Posted January 4, 2013 Which bit is bent? have you dug out the outer bearings totally? The casings look to be intact, so possibly salvageable.
dave205 19 Posted January 4, 2013 No the outer and inner bearings are still in the tube. When the tibe is on the floor you can clearly see its bent
pug_ham 243 3 Cars Posted January 5, 2013 Most of that beam is scrap but for the centre tube to have bent means it must've been in a big wreck so I'd scrap it all. g
dave205 19 Posted January 5, 2013 Yeah it was in a big smash unfortunately .

welshpug 1,646 Posted January 5, 2013 both well overpriced if you look hard enough. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120976019232?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted January 5, 2013 I was about to comment that those kits on ebay are usually overpriced, but the first one seems not too bad seeing as it includes the shafts as well (as to whether they are genuine parts I couldnt tell you) You'll probably find that all the beam guru's will swear by genuine only parts
adam1973 1 1 Cars Posted January 5, 2013 Cool, thanks... Have saved into watch list so when funds allow, & can find a decent (cheap, lol) spanner man to do work etc, will get done.
johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted January 5, 2013 you might find that if you're getting somebody to do it for you that theyll be able to get parts more cost effectively Im sure theres a few guys within an afternoons drive of you that'll be able to help
