Headlight Issues

Recommended Posts

After some headlight wiring advice folks, my Ax's headlights are playing silly b*ggers.

The history first as it may give clues, since I bought the car it has had an intermittent fault with dipped beam going off randomly. Could be driving along just fine with dipped beams on and suddenly they would off with out warning. Turning the stalk back to sidelights and then back to dipped didn't do anything, however flashing on the main beams would bring the dipped beams back on! Most peculiar.

Anyway over the months i've had the car this has got progressively worse, becoming more frequent and requiring multiple flashes of main beam to get dipped working again. This came to a head the other night when the dipped beam could not be flicked back on by the main beams at all!

What has gone wrong to cause this? Is it a stalk issue or something in the wiring? I suspected it was a relay issue, however I have tried all the relays I can find in the car with no success. I currently have the bulb wiring bodged so that what the stalk thinks is main beam is actually dipped, leaving me with functional lights but no option for main beam!

Any advice welcome as it has me a bit stumped.

I don't think the main beam has a relay in the system, I'm on with refurbing a lights etc loom & they run direct from the fuse box to the lamps so I'd try a stalk.

If you have a 205 one it could fit, iirc the early ax's had similiar to the 309 stalks so the plug could match.

Thanks for the advice guys, had a good look at this yesterday as the dash was apart changing a speedo cable. I feel pretty sure you are right, the stalk seems well past its best, the rotating bit the horn is on isn't flush up to the rest of it like i remember my 205 one being. Alas i have no 205 stalks, never had one spare even when I owned one. Replacement has been sourced in the form of a mint 106 one from ebay so hopefully it'll be functioning well again soon!
