how do i tell what phase my 205 is

I'll be a Phase 1.5 (although late G plate had some Phase 2 parts on them like seats, BE3 gearbox and inlet mounted coil - so they're often called Phase 1.75 models)

Mine may be a 'ph1.75' then. I've the later seats and BE3 gearbox. Can't remember the coil arrangement exactly. I'm sure it was in a round metal bracket which looked to be like it would attach to the body (half my original engine came in a box in the boot).

Phase 1 ran until approx January 88 & phase 1.5 until approx September 90, according to "Sporting 205's"
