Green Wire Identification

Recommended Posts

rikky

quick one hopefully for someone! one of the brown plugs on my engine bay loom (which feeds into the hole next to the bonnet release cable) has a green wire broken on it. it was like this when removed from the car but i'm curious as to what it was/is

car is a J plate 1.6 GTi..

it's a green wire, and it was broken right at the wire number so can't identify it's number. i've since soldered a bit of wire and terminal onto each end so it can be reconnected quickly if it's a problem. it was already broken though, and the car is believed to have ran fine as it already was

just hoping someone can give me a clue as to what it is? i've got no haynes or anything to hand..

thanks in advance!

(it's the on with the heatshrink on which i'm querying, not the 2nd green one from the left)

if this thread is anything to go off:

http://forum.205gtid...ndpost&p=829604

it could be wire number 7A (pin 5) which is alternator

(also if the first wire is 112 i can put my rev counter box thing to that)

Are these the plugs for the fusebox under the dash?

If so then looking at the haynes manual wiring diagrams at the fusebox connections will show you the wire numbers for each plug & fron that you'll be able to find the missing wire number & what it does.

What are the numbers on the other wires you can read?

hey, this is the 2x brown plugs which are the engine bay loom which, until i start putting the interior wiring and fusebox back in, i am unsure what they connect to. my haynes manual is in a sorry state of repair and a lot of the pages are missing / falling out so i would guess it'll be no use anyway. i am guessing they do go to the fusebox yes. i have so much wiring to sort thorugh inside i can't being to remember what is what at the moment!

i will find the other wire numbers tonight. it's a totally bare shell so putting bits back in and chipping away little bits at a time, so like i said a lot of wiring is still absent. looks like the blue one is 112, so at a guess the others from the thread i linked above are correct, which would make it the alternator 7A wire. which does what i am unsure, as the car ran without that wire connected.. well, intermittently.. (put down to a dodgy fuel pump, which a new one seemed to make it run all the time)

I have a list of all the numbers written out at home from when I had to swap mine over to DTA, so I'll soon be able to tell you the number of it - that's if I bothered to keep the pieces of paper.

The loom that runs through the bulkhead where you say is for the lights etc, not the engine management which comes through into the engine bay under the drivers side dash near where the steering column goes through.

Post the other wire numbers when you can to find exactly where it goes & what its for.

I think its one of the plugs from above the fuse box & doesn't connect into it, especially from looking at the plug, the pins are the wrong side to fit into the fusebox.

I have an exactly the same looking wire going to the oil pressure sender - I know it's a long shot but worth a check.

that's a completely different loom though isn't it? oil pressure sender is purple/grey 30b i believe on the engine loom. i am guessing the engine loom doesn't plug into this, and these 2 plugs go to the fusebox. i've just done my gti6 wiring from the 205 looms and infact it was definitely 30b for the oil pressure as i wired a spade into it last night. the normal wire 30 is the light only

right, from my photo above, going right to left.

pin1 - blank, no pin

pin2 - 112 blue

pin3 - 47b yellow

pin4 - 74a red

pin5 - (my snapped green one)

pin6 - blank, no pin

pin7 - 47 white

pin8 - 69a green

'amp' - 2x black wires joined, 69b and 69c

so, from the other thread i linked above, all the wires match my numbers here, so i'm safe to assume that this broken one is infact 7A alternator? it was broken when the car worked fine i'm led to believe. i shall reconnect it

unless anyone knows a reason why it is a bad idea..?

I'll compare the numbers you have with the haynes manual & post soon.

The only way you would realise the alternator wire was broken would be when you had a dead alternator & no dash warning light so the battery was low or dead when you went to start it.

Not yet, as thought in a previous reply, it doesn't seem to plug into the fusebox so I haven't found it on a wiring diagram yet.

I'll have a look at a different haynes I have with peugeot's own wiring diagrams in as they are better to follow & find wires.

I ended up having to use the diagram for a 1.9 GTI as the haynes manual doesn't list the 1.6 other than in 1986 on which doesn't include this plug breakdown.

This is plug # PC2;

It is wire 7A & runs to the alternator as you found out.

Which Haynes manual is that from? Both my copies have a different style of diagram to that.

Its just from a different publication of the old Haynes 932, the code inside the front cover is 932-6R5 published in 1989 for up to 1989 models, I've both types of wiring diagrams but these are the orignal peugeot diagrams I understand.

Must be only in the earlier editions. My old-style manual (published 1993) has the same diagrams as the newer manuals.

Yeah, most of the ones I have are the other style of wiring diagram which isn't as detailed, both older & newer versions. :(
