Hi,

I,m breaking a X reg GTI-6 and from what iv read on here i have unlocked the ecu but just in case it isn't is there anything else other than the transponder from around the ignition barrel and the key that i should remove from the car.

Many thanks Paul

the transponder unit is in the dash in front of the ashtray, the thing around the ignition barrel is a generic aerial.

That's odd. Once upon a time, I sold a GTI-6 engine and included just the key and the bit around the ignition key barrel

and they were able to put it in a 205 and start it up with no problems.

if it goes into a 205, you don't need the key.

It was to my understanding that the key itself is coded (i.e. that it's a transmitter) and that the barrel bit is the receiver.

Must have been an unlocked ECU to begin with then.

But it's also possible that I had included all the other required bits too, but have a memory blank :D.

All a 205 owner requires is the engine and an unlocked ECU. The immobiliser bits you mention become redundant.

The ring around the barrell is just an aerial. Is not coded to the particular 306.

Yes, but what if the ECU is locked instead? What parts off a 306 would be required in this case?

Off 'a' 306? If you plug an 'unlocked' ECU in another 306 it will lock again instantly and be no good.

If you had the original donor 306 and it was still complete you could plug it back in and unlock it if you forgot to the first time if you removed it with I ignition on or if you have disposed of the 306 by that stage then you'd need to send the ECU off to have it unlocked by the firmware being fiddled with so it was unlocked permanently for use in any 306.

From another angle. If you had a 306 with an ECU fault, buying a DIY 'unlocked' ECU would be no good, you'd need a properly permanently unlocked ECU.

For a 205, the ECU never sees a 306 immobiliser setup to get locked by again, so a DIY one is fine.

just a few questions on this....

i need to replace the ecu on my 306, ive got 2nd hand a DIY "unlocked" one (just the ecu no key/trasponder).

can i dissable/remove the immobiliser on my 306 so that i can run the 2nd hand ecu?

i did read that pp2000 can set the 2nd ecu up to run on my 306 but the details were vage

Yep, just unplug the transponder unit, however in a 306 if you have the original components that match the ecu use them, though only if they are the same type, later cars have alarm integrated into the same unit i believe.

You'll also have the problem of the central locking not working as well if you unplug it. I we've yet to get it working on my mates ph3 with a diy unlocked ecu

Is this the transponder piece that goes with the ecu?

that looks like the alarm unit in my old 106 gti, which I removed as the US sensors had cacked them selves. It in no way effected the 'locking' and 'unlocking' of the ecu.

Um this is all i can find other than the unit for the air bag?

so whats the plan with unplugging it?

do you have the ignition on then unplug the transponder then the ecu then turn the ignition off?

what about fitting the replacment ecu? just plug it in then start the car?
