Such A Thing As Weak Spark?

Recommended Posts

Jim Slim

A few months ago i had finished my mi16 conversion/rebuild and all was well, i did 500 trouble free miles and then one day driving along and all dials fails and so did engine, this was only for around a second ( almost like i turned engine off then switched back on again) i ignored it as after this it was okay.

I then drive it the next day and it cuts out after around 5 mins and wont re-fire, i jiggle leads, relays and wires try again (after around 10 mins) and it fires but again cuts out!

Now it wont fire at all!! i have replaced leads, plugs, coil, dizzy, rotar arm, ignition amp the lot! i have tested the spark coming from king lead and it seems very slight ( so much so that the copper of rotar arm is like brand new, suggestion the spark isnt going any furhter?)

I had the car running a couple years back fine and before deciding to rebuild it and replace everything it developed this problem, but after the rebuild and everything it run like a gem, not 1 problem at all until this fault has randomly re surfaced!

i really am very confused as to what it could be, any ideas would be great! n

cheers J

You can have a weak spark, but if the gauge(s) are dropping at the same time the engine looses power I would suggest that the fault lies elsewhere - typically, with a weak spark or other issue on the HT side of the ignition, the tacho will still read correctly.

sorry mate the gauges only dropped out whilst iwas driving! when im turning the key all is as it should be and turns over fine but it just wont fire, as i said there is a spark but it seems to be very faint and almost as if its not gettin out of the dizzy ??

other than that the only dial issue i have is that no matter what the oil temp i think ( top right) is always over to the right!

the loom was shortened and re made by miles about 2 years ago now also so that should be tip top
