Defecting From The 205 Fold

Recommended Posts

Doof

Well, after 6 years with my current 205 I've made the decision to sell up and buy something else. I'm not straying too far from 205's and hope I don't regret the decision of picking up a supercharged 306 GTi-6 (m306's for those on 306gti6.com). :)

It's actually quite sad as I've owned 205's for 10 years now but I've come to the conclusion that it's daft to become attached to a car. The worst bit is that this is all happening after spending so much time and money on my current 205, but hey, at least I actually finished it and enjoyed it for a while. Sadly my 205's shell has been neglected a little since i've owned it and so it's pretty rusty in places and looks like a golf ball when you look down the side of it! The lure of something that looks a little neater in terms of bodywork condition and something allows me to listen to music without having to overcome loads of engine and road noise has drawn me towards a 306 with pretty much standard suspension. Yea it won't handle like the 205 does but I figured that since all of my driving in the last few years has been on roads, and without the money to be doing track days, the 306 will suit my needs better than the 205.

Sadly it looks like there's only one way to get some money back from the 205 and that's to break it. I've got a great idea for the shell though once I've stripped it so that I can remember what a great car it was. Something like this...http://www.virtual-t...-08-the-bbq.jpg

Right move? Wrong move? Who knows. Part of me thinks that after 10 years with 205's I've got to try something else otherwise I'll look back at my car history and wonder why on earth I only ever owned one type of car, it's a bit boring isn't it? Saying that it's hardly a wild change.

I've got to thank everyone on this forum for all the help over the years i've owned this car. All the guys that have been around since the start of this forum have really helped!

Here she is:

First impressions after picking it up on Friday? It's absolutely fantastic! It's much much faster than my 205 which is not surprising considering it's running about 250bhp. The ride is a little soft but nice not to crash over every little bump. The bodywork is great and after a days detailing will look mint. I love the fact I can cruise along in 6th at 40mph with almost no noise, yet I can drop a few gears and go screaming off like nothing else. Superchargers have to be one of the best inventions ever!

Mmmm:

RIP another 205. Sorry to do it guys but rusty inner wings means there's no other option.

Thanks,

Lewis

Feb, it's the coast road from Weymouth to Bridport, just outside of Abbotsbury. It's a great road...

You've done the opposite of me! I had my 306 for 8 years and then made the switch to my 205 having wanted one since i was about 12. The 306 is a great car no doubt about that but the 205 just has that little something special for me, it is horses for courses though.

Now i see a 306 (even your lovely supercharged example - which looks mint btw) and think.....donor!

Sam

EDIT - i will add that there are times when i curse the 205 and want my 306 back - times like today when i try to replace the headlight adjusters and realise the bolts are made of chocolate/rust so i have to drill them out, ffs!

my opinion is that like most of us serial 205 gti owners you will be back and get another!

and personally i am sad to hear you are gonna destroy a car that many of us would keep on the road one way or another :(

I binned my 205 for MK2 Golf 1.8T, very quick car drives as you state above but would happily go back to a quick 205 with the harshness and sound of ITB's.

Tidy motor all the same.

I followed your build thread on the 205, as you say got there in the end.

So you bought it, not a bad car at all but a couple of things that was on the list, mainly the beam and suspension refresh

Please ditch the Blue bit's on it, Not my thing but the old owner did,

Boo. :(

Nice looking car & I bet it doesn't half move.

Should make standard suspension interesting with that power, get the rear beam rebuilt asap like Miles suggests, 306's eat them worse than the 205.

I'll definitely be sticking around on here, the new car is still an XU and this is surely the best resource for knowledge and and great community!

I'll probably look at refurbing the beam next summer. Interesting to hear your comments on it Miles. Do let me know if you remember anything else that might not be quite right!

I'll definitely lose the blue headlights, not sure I can be bothered losing the blue dials though. Taking dashes apart isn't fun!

Graham, one thing you do notice is the front of the car lifting and diving between gear changes. I'm sure I could go a little stiffer and will probably go down that route one day, for now I've got to just enjoy it as is though....must...not...tinker!!

easy on the 306, it really is, Makes the 205 look difficult

Suspension needs to be OE height due to the IC pipes, Silly place to but them but I guess it's a cost/fitting solution than anything else,

Hows the stalling? it seems to be quite a issue from the few I've seen and what others have said

I'd look at doing the beam sooner rather than later, its only a half day job if you catch it early enough, longer you leave it the more expensive it can be.

As for the front lifting, stiffer rear bars (Xsara VTS) & better (or new) rear shocks could help, especially if it still has the original shocks on.

The 306 dash comes apart easily, nothing like the 205 & the clocks can be out in 10 minutes, iirc you only need to remove either 4 or six torx screws!!

Stalling isn't too bad on it, Miles. From cold it's not really a problem, once it's warmed up you have to be a little careful. I suppose the lightweight flywheel is probably making it worse because it does seem very free revving. Dipping the clutch above 2k will stall it but it's so drivable under 2k that it's generally not a problem. I've been used to the 205 stalling constantly for the last 2 years so I'm well practised in the art of keeping engines running while braking :)

Given the milage I'll be doing I'm sure the beam can at least wait 'til the spring. I'll definitely get some new OE shocks on it and probably stiffer components next year, though I'm quite liking the supple nature of OE suspension...is this what getting older is like?

Don't think it's roland rats car, unless Mark bought it off him previously.

Time to get ebaying for some crystal P3 lights.

Anyone know any good car detailers to use? Thinking about getting it properly machine polished in the new year.

I bought a CTR EP3 to replace my aging 205 GTI.

The Civic is easier to live with, but because I've not neded to take it apart every month I've fallen out of love with it.

Can't wait to get my CTI on the road.

I'm thinking about buying a GTI to restore too when I move house

I'm not 100% certain about this but I think it is stored by the cph / bsi so it shouldn't change when you swap them.

BTW, weren't crystals standard fit on phase 3 cars?
