Opinions On Wheels....

Recommended Posts

GeorgeXS

Hi all, looking for some opinions on wheels for my AX GTI. Tyres are beginning to get quite low on the original alloys and cannot decide whether to buy some different wheels at the same time. Looking for either 13 or 14 inch wheels, 15's look too big on AX's imo.

Torn between:

Standard GTI alloys

106 Rallye S2

106 XSI

205 1.6 GTI wheels

or welcome to other suggestions.....

The 1.6 alloy is a spare I have just held in front so looks bigger than it should!

I think the standard wheel suits it just fine, though the rallye steels give it an AX sport look.

Other wheels, hmm, maybe some TH's.

For me it would be the standard wheels or the rallye wheels

Keep the originals for the sake of originality :hehe: Or if you do change i'd personally go for the Rallye steels :)

TH's aren't a bad shout, but to have them silver or white.....

Capri 13" 7spoke RS wheels look good too.

Can see them being alright but i'm looking for something direct fit if possible, trying to achieve tidyness on a tight budget!

Personally on a rare car that is quite original, then it deserves to keep its original wheels and would spoil it if they were changed.

I'm with Tom. I like the originals.

Possibly BX 16v wheels if the offset is right?

XSI Wheels, the originals haven't aged well in my eyes.

I've got a very strong bias against any wheel with fewer than 5 spokes myself so for that reason I'm not keen on the standard alloys. Ignore anyone who says "blah blah keep it original... blah blah rarity factor.. blah blah blah..." It's only an old small hatchback after all, 99% of other road users will only see it that way, so pretty much the only person who has to care about originality is you, and whoever you try and sell it to; in which case just put the original wheels back on.

From that picture I think the 1.6 205 alloys would look good. the lighting kinda throws it off, what with the wheel not actually being fitted to the car, but if you've got a set lying around give it a go! The steels kinda cheapen it in my opinion. Base model cheap & cheerful cars have steel wheels, sportier top-of-the-trim-list cars have alloys.

Thanks for all the advice guys, current plan is to stick with the original wheels for the time being. When the tyres become dead, I will give them a refurb as they are dull flaking in places. Main reason behind staying with these wheels, other than originality, is the weight! The difference between one of the original wheels and a 1.6 gti speedline is noticeable. So I am sticking with the cars theme of being damn light, and fun as a result!

Only thing that will sway me at the moment...........

I have had 2 or three AX Gt's and GTi's back in the day. I once spent a FORTUNE on a brand new set of 15" white Compomotive MO's (three stud) for my GT500. They created sex wee
