Two 205's On One Trailer, How Small A Trailer Can I Use?

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

On from my Shiply thread, I need to move two 205's. I think I will hire a trailer and use my wife's diesel Passat instead of getting someone else to do it. My question is, instead of doing two 70 mile round trips, can I get a trailer that would fit two 205's and if so how short/small can it be and will a 2.0 tdi Passat estate tow them safely and legally?

Anyone done it or should I just do two runs?

I can't see how you're going to do it legally - two 205's and the trailer (prob 2.5 tonnes combined) will be way over the Passat's towing weight, and if you have a licence subject to the new towing rules and haven't done the B+E test then you'll fall foul of that too I suspect.

Not only that, but I would suspect that it would be horrible towing that much weight behind a Passat.

plus a trailer capable of carrying two 205's will not be light at all, I have seen one on the continent and it weighed around a ton on its own, so you're looking at needing a towing cap of at least 3 tons.

some of the larger 4x4's might be able to pull it off, like any Defender, as they are all rated at 3.5 ton.

given the costs, it would surely be far cheaper to check them over, book and MOT and get some insurance, and drive them there?

Transfer insurance onto one, then tow the other home.

The biggest engine passats are rated at 1600kg but most are 1300kg so no use!

Passat is an anagram of Tap ass

Thanks chaps, yep you are right, weight is the issue, although the Passat can tow 2000kg.

Alas I am of an age where the trailer classes were given away for free when I passed my test.

The cars are off to mid term storage - 2/3 years probably so little point in taxing/altering the off the road insurance etc.

My folk's barn near Saffron Walden alas.

Work and my two year old son means I haven't touched either car for over a year.

It's not forever though.

Going by how my Audi A4 TDI towed a heavy trailer with a 309 on the back, I certainly would not want to tow two cars at once unless I had a 3-4litre engine!

Jonny, there are a couple of guys around here that can do it for you but I don't think you can avoid the double bubble that taking two cars will cost, are any of them drivable? If so I don't mind ferrying one for you.

Thanks Andrew, I should be okay I'm going to hire a normal trailer and do two runs, it's not that much of a hassle.
