Fuel Pump Problems!

Recommended Posts

dartman

i all, recently stuck a 106 gti 16v in my base model 205,

first problem is there is no wire on my loom that goes to a fuel pump? so i just wired it in to the ignition, hate to say it but it is an inline pump, anyway it started up and ticked over fine, although the pumps makes a hell of a noise! after a while the engine started to splutter then i took it down the road and it was starving a little however when i pulled up on the drive i turned the ignition off, but the car kept running, i then disconnected the battery and the engine still ran for a good 5 mins before cutting out i thought this was now over fueled andit was just running on its own heat and pressure in the fuel lines. i have changed over all the fuel lines and the pump is from a 405 mi16 jobbie, i have now purchased a gti tank and pump will that solve the problem?

Sounds like you have cut/bridged the wrong wire and made the ignition live a permanent live.

admittedly my key was wired up to ignition so i did perminent live the fuel pump and everything eles jus to get it done the road but how did it keep running when the battery was totaly disconected?

because the alternator was powering it up.

ok then i cut the ignition wire that i put to perminent live which contols the ecu and spark etc and it still ran! anyway doyou no if the gti fuel pump will stop the fuelling issue or is it because its wired up wrong?

The fuel pump should really be controlled by the double relay on the 106 gti engine loom. Doing that will not cure the run on problem though. As WP has said it sounds like a switched live is connected to a permanent live.

i no the double relay you are refering to but there is no fuel pump wire pin 23 of my multiplug should go to pin 5 on relay then inertia switch then fuel pump, my 23 goes to pin 5 then goes to spark plug, and inertia switch just goes to ecu. there arnt any lose wires to be connected to the fuel pump. anyway i think the ignition wire to fuel pump should be ok, but i still understand how my engine was running on with no power to ecu from battery the only way i could stop the engine was to disconnect the ecu :S

i realy dont understand this now lol, basically all wires on the multiplug is wired up to a single wire which i was just hoping to connect to the ignition but the problem is i can connect the battery up then touch the single wire to the battery, it starts up but i can imiediatly take it off and the car still runs perfectly any idea as to what wire is running the engine and were it should go? the engine i bought had the loom alredy attached to it so the alternater etc sould all be wired correctly however i have noticed a few cut wires up by the multiplug but i justed assumed this was the imoberliser of ecu etc. any ideas?

Double relay must be connected properly. Check the following connections on relay.

Pin 5 to inetia switch then fuel pump.

Pin 14 switched 12V

Pins 2, 8 and 11 permanent 12V.

yes, I believe there are differences!

tbh you can never 100% trust wiring diagrams, you do need to confirm via wire numbers, their locations can vary as you have found out.

Yes the Citroen loom is different. Ignore my last connections. Check these at double relay

Pin 13 to fuel pump

Pin 14 switched 12V

Pins 2, 8, 11 and 15 to permanent 12V

Inertia switch goes between pin 7 on double relay and pin 7 on ECU.

spot on info that man! now the final problem of running on, i believe i no the issue, so on the multi plug there is a pin that goes to the alternater i fort that was power to alt but it may be return? if it is return then this is touching al the other ignition wires without going through the battery does this make sense to anyone?

The alternater has two wires to it. One is a large cable that goes to the battery (dosnt go through a multiplug), the other is small and connects to the battery warning lamp on the instrument cluster.

that small wire wouldnt carry a live to the warning light for any reason lol back to square one with that then.
