Just Bought A 205 Help Needed

just bought a 205 gti 1.9

 

4000 revs in 5th is 70ish... is this the standard gear ratio??

 

also looking to do a few maintance mod items... what do people suggest to keep the motor health and get the best out of the standard lump... cam/manifold/exhaust/filter/plugs/leads suggestions and expected power please

 

also is it worth doing the carb conversion if so what ones are best??

 

 

i am looking to overhaul car for a trip to spa next year :)

How much power are you looking to produce from the engine? As this will determine the answers people give you.

 

Parts like plugs, leads and filters are generally just replaced with an OE equivalent and are part of the general maintenance.

Sounds about right for the RPM you see.

 

Carb conversions can see good returns if done properly although the amount of messing about with them over years will be more than enough to put you off.

 

The cyclinder heads are made quite aggressive as standard. depending on which model you have.. the later ones had bigger valves and a better cam to give it the extra 15BHP over the older models.

 

an inpection on your engine would be advised before upgrading as most are quite worn these days.

 

My advise would be to keep it standard, and maybe chuck an exhaust on if the engine is a good one.

Revs @ 70mph sounds more like a 1600 gearbox to me. This is quite a common swap for faster acceleration.

 

The 1.9 engines only ever had the larger valves so the comments in the post above don't apply to the 1900 engine.

 

Peugeot did a good job of making the absolute most of what they had, so do not expect to gain much power if any by fitting aftermarket filters or exhausts, the standard items are very good already.

I agree with Tom, 4000rpm @ ~70mph sounds more like you have a 1.6 box fitted, a 1.9 with the correct box is nearer 3300rpm iirc.

 

One easy test is can you clear 60mph in second before hitting the limiter? If you don't see 60 then you have a 1.6 box imo, a 1.9 box should see about 65mph in second iirc.

This only applies to the very early 105bhp XU5J engines fitted to the early run of 1.6 GTI's before they made the 1.9, later 1.6's have the same head but the cam also changes between the two engines.

 

I always use NGK spark plugs, recommended to me by a local Peugeot specialists & after running one on Bosch plugs for a short while before swapping to NGK, I've stuck with them.

 

Mark sorrento205 was suffering a misfire on his 1.6 GTI & resorted to swapping the management system to MP3.1 after changing every part if the jetronic system except the plugs which he'd only recently fitted yet still had the misfire & I suggested trying some NGK's over the bosch he had fitted, cured the misfire instantly. :)

yeah im thinking its 1.6 box after what you guys say. i used the gear ratio calculator thats what got me thinking.

 

car has a blown manifold so i was going to replace with a 4-1 number. are these the same for 1.6 and 1.9?

 

power wise id be happy with 150ishbhp? thats what my r 5 turbos ran reliably and this 205 feel much much better for low down torque.

 

i have a oil leak on the top somewhere im gonna start with rocker change and check all oil pipes for splits... it seems to be by the filler neck..... any common faults?

The aftermarket 4-1 exhaust manifolds are the same for both the 1.6 & 1.9 but don't forget to fit the uprated lower mount or they are prone to cracking which will loose power.

 

To get 150ish bhp from a 1.9 is harder said than done imo, obviously carbs will see this when set up properly but if you were to stick with injection then you'd be looking at a bit more work on the engine to get this & thats assuming you have a healthy engine that gices close to its original piower now, many 1.9's don't hold the power as well as the 1.6.

 

Any oil around the filler neck is either from a split hose or sloppy maintenance, there shouldn't be any pressurised oil near there but they do gather oil in the breather hoses which will look the same as a leak if the hose is split.
