Registering An Engine Conversion

Recommended Posts

jamie_1992

I see a lot of engine conversions being done and just wondered how hard is it to register them. I'm currently putting a gti6 engine in my 205, do normal insurance company's accept the change if its registered or will it be a specialist company

Do you not need engine numbers ?

Many of the engine numbers will have come off over the years so be impossible to find... Changing the cc of the engine on the logbook is suffice for most.

Insurance is a completely different thing though, have a quick search about it as the topic has been covered half a million times before?? Most useful thing you can do though (IMO) is to sit down and call everyone you can find the number for and get quotes.

the dvla wouldnt change the engine cc in my gti6 conversion even with the engine numbers, they said i needed to have it verified by the right authority like the aa or something.

so never bothered.....

insurance is another thing though, as long as its declared there should be no comebacks?

not a big deal for me now as im building a 1.8 vts engine in my 1.9 shell (so a smaller engine)

I also got them wanting someone to verify it. I just took the car to a local garage and got them to write a letter saying it had a 1998cc engine on a letter with a proper letterhead. DVLA were happy with that

I could have got my mot place to do it I suppose but I made the effort, they refused so that was the end of that :)

Do the delightful chaps at Swansea charge for the privilege of keeping them up to date?

I was going to change it on my last gti but like already said above, they require a cover letter from a garage to say its been done to safe standard.

Imo if its in there and runs what the f**ks the issue?!

Engine CC never changed on mine.

My old 205 never had the original engine number on the V5.

As long as you declare it to your insurance company you should be fine - unless you are going from say a 1.4 to a 1.9, in which case you would be underpaying road tax; they might not be happy then because the tax threshold is 1500cc. I went from a 1.6 to a 1.9 and never bothered to alter the v5 since the tax would have been the same either way.

Insurance and the V5 are completely unrelated - it can be a 1.1 on the v5 and you can insure it as a 3.0.

ive never told dvla about my engine although its insured correctly, i dont see the harm if in a 1600 or 1900 shell as the tax should remain the same. Few years back i had a 250cc road legal buggy and we swapped the engine in that and i just added 50cc to the registration document each time till it was the correct cc they dont notice it this way, yes its ball ache but over the time its less hassle.

Ive had previous experience on this issue.

I fitted a 2.0 turbo engine into a little corsa 4 or so years ago.

Adrian flux were very helpful and were more than happy to insure it, i went though every single modification, i admit the insure shot up through the rood from a group 1 car to a group 18.

But it was well worth the money i was paying for insurance to know i was fully legit. as for the dvla i sent a letter to them with the logbook notifiying them that im a qualified peugeot/citroen tech and they seemed fine with it.

When I first Mi'd my 205 I told the DVLA the new engine size and code. The forms came back with just the engine code changed, so I sent it off again with an explanation regarding their mistake. This time it came back with the right capacity but a random engine code. 3rd time lucky, I got the logbook back with all the right details...
