Electric Or Hydraulic Power Steering On A Gti-6 Conversion

Recommended Posts

Castorkid

Hi forum,

Planning a Gti-6 engine conversion on my 205 next winter and would appreciate some advice. My 205 is an E reg 1.9 8v without power steering. I have very limited mechanical abilities and would be sending it to a specialist for all the work. Thing is, I'd like to add power steering whilst it still has its 1.9 engine. Given the planned engine upgrade, would I be better off going for the electric power steering option, the conventional hydraulic option or just waiting until I have the engine conversion done?

Cheers

Nick

Use the gti6 high pressure power steering pipe and a pas rack. With that engine it is a direct fit. Plus return piping and a tank of course :)

Paul Boxall, a rallying chum, has fitted electric to his and is very happy with it. The beauty of that approach, of course, is that you can fit a very cheap genuine quick rack kit from Quaife for a little over £100 notes and have a very quick steering car without resorting to VTS racks or rare PTS quick ratio racks. If you're not fussed for trying to get down to 2.4 turns lock-to-lock (or less), then I'd just stick with hydraulic, particularly for a road car where maybe the faffing around under the steering column may be awkward.

Ahh I'll have to have a look at Paul's next time I see him, was that on the old shell as well? never had that good a look around it.

Yep, on his old one just before he did Belgium. I suspect he's keeping it in the new shell, he had only good words!

Will eventually be fitting electric pas to mine.Seems the modern way foreward now with the dash adjuster and have seen many people swapping hydraulic to electric and raving about it.

If you want a number for a top EPS guru pm me,will pass on his details.
