hi im looking at repairing an hole in the block, the hole is for mounting the gearbox, 4 holes in total one is stripped of it threads, possibly when i got one of these cheep clutch repaire centres to change my cluth last time, they also managed to brake the plastic arch trim too :angry: anywho my question is an m10 helicoil the internal diameter or external diameter? im looking at these and wondering if there the right ones for the job? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120996761686

The size is the nominal size of the threaded bolt that the insert suits. The bolts from engine to gearbox are M10 standard pitch which is 1.5. Those you linked to are fine pitch (incorrect). Also that link is just for spare inserts, on their own they are no use unless you have the drill and special tap that goes with them. eBay item no 260927163479 is an example of what you need to do the job, along with a drill of some sort and a tap wrench.

M10 is the thread size for the fastener going into it.

 

Which hole is damaged BTW? personally I'd try and get a timesert in there as they are stronger but I'm not sure there would be enough meat on the lower front corner for one to be used.

thanks for the replies guy's i think im gonna go m10 X 1.5 2D, if this is correct. I dont know what a timesert is would this be a better option then?

Helicoils are cr*p compared to Timeserts, Not the cheapest option thou as a kit mind I use Wurth ones start around £75.00 up

Helicoils are fine when fitted properly. Hence the billions of them in aircraft.

As said above, I would not bother with Helicoils, I use Timeserts eveytime I need to replace a striped thread.
