Why Do We Call 205 Gti6's? (Unless They Have A 6 Speed Box)

Recommended Posts

Discuss as the 306 GTi6 was only relating to the 6 speed box, You never hear anyone calling there 205 a 205 VTS

If you said I drive a 205 GTi-5, or a VTS then you would have to go through the monotony of explaining your reasonings for your particular naming strategy. Everyone knows (car enthusiast wise) what a 205 GTi-6 is however. Plus everyone thinks a VTS is a saxo!

Although an entirely valid point, it obviously started because it was an easy way of describing the transplant of the engine from a 306 GTI6, so no different in that respect to calling them 205 Mi16s. Even if the "Mi16" engine had been taken from a BX 16V, people would still call it a 205 Mi16.

And if you say- 'I drive a Peugeot 205 with an XU10j4rs and BE3 gearbox' you'll look like a right sad ¥%}+=%# and you will never have sex with a girl ever again

Not forgetting those who use an S16 as a donor and still call it an Mi16

Unless you keep the 6 speed box, no. Just a discreet 16v GTi in my eyes.

An Mi'd 205 is different though. 205 Mi16 sounds way cooler ;)

If anyone asked my 205 was a "205 GTi with an Mi16 conversion" and the 309 "a 309 GTi with a 16 valve conversion". 9/10 people wouldn't understand or even care if I told them any more than that, anyone else would ask further.

No idea, i've pretty much always labelled them a GTi16 rather than anything else, that would've been the official name had they ever built a 16v 205.

At least the bx uses the same block as mi16. Gti6 you know straight away its heavier cast block. Just makes it easier to identify. Just as a side note the mi16 seems better as a conversion. Its of the same vintage so seems more correct. And i agree it sounds cooler.

But the later 2.0 Mi16 is also a cast block, so that's irrelevant.

I propose a simpler convention. Henceforth, all conversions should be named thusly:

1.9 Mi16 - Bob

2.0 Mi16 - Frank

2.0 S16 - Jimmy

2.0 GTI6 - Reggie

2.0 VTS - Mildred

T16 - Alan

2.0 8v Turbo - Cecil

So, if a 306 GTI-6 engined 205 is called 205 GTI-6, then a 306 GTI-6 engined 205 with a 6-speed gearbox is 205 GTI-6-6? :D

Nah, following my proposed format, it'd have to be called a Tom.

Or Julian.

Who really cares who calls what, what really matters is how much fun these cars give you when working well...

The Dutch have gone round that issue by traditionally calling them 205 RFS.

That way it's designated solely by its engine. For those in the know anyway.

A gti is not a rfs though is it?

What about calling them 205 GTI RS ?

Renault/Rallye Sport / Audi already use that.
