Quite a few I would imagine!! Currently mine is in the workshop getting what seems to be a full retsoration. I only got it in to do a small patch of welding on the floor pan last week. Now its strippied out, rear beam off for a rebuild, undercarriage blasted and treated, engine out and engine bay being resprayed along with other bitsl!! I only re sprayed the body last year and thought that was that. How wrong was I!!!

All depends on what u know in accordense with how much u love your car etc , for instance alot on here could do a dam site more than what i can do under the bonnet so it woul cost them less money and still get wht they want where as someone else will have to pay a dam site more meaning they wont go throught with it , but people who rhe 205 is everything to them they will spent a hige amount getting it correct all 205 now will need maintaining and turn into a money pit if kept long enought etc and pretty much every single thing ive ever planned with the car something doesnt work out correctly and end up costing more hahaha 9/10 times

Modified car = money pit. I constanty find once you have modified something you find yourself modifying the modification....

My standard 1.6 I have only spent 200 hundred on servicing ,my mi16 however I have spent thousands over the years. You get to a point when theres no return you have to finish the mess you started lol.But thats the fun of these cars and like today at the fuel station people came up and talked to me about the mighty 205gti. If you go on any enthusiast forum you will find people like us spending their hard earnt cash it can be an expensive hobby. This is a question I ask myself most days but rather than bought and sold 10 gti's id rather have one sorted car. Good luck with your gti6 it will be well worth it.

The 205 isn't anywhere near a money pit as other projects of mine but to answer your question, no you're not alone haha

I've spent a fair bit on my 205 since i bought it back in '08, but mainly to keep it working/reliable and avoid any of the usual problems that can crop up, so mine hasn't hit the money pit spec yet.

Although i have owned a couple of cars over the years that have swallowed more money than i intended - my current Saxo VTS (supposed track car) being one of them

Spend money somewhere and then realise it now wants some more spending on it somewhere else, therefore meaning it's been on track a grand total of 1 time, and only just gone back to being road legal 2 weeks ago to try and get some bloody use out of it on the road (he says hoping it doesn't break down when he next goes out for a drive in it  )

Had mine 11 years and have pumped about 5-6k into it to keep it alive / in good condition. Not too bad i think, considering you'd get that much depreciation on a new car in year 1...

Spending lots of money on repairing / restoring 205's is good for the economy and as your 'recycling' the environment benefits too, at least that's what I try tell the Mrs.

always costs more than running a boring car ;)

They say for every 10bhp gained costs around £1000.

I seem to have gained 70.

Cars aren't cheap and modifying is an endless task!

my car should have a lot more bhp than it does in that case.. ;)

They're only as much of a money pit as you want them to be.

Buy the right car in the first place, maintain it properly and learn to do most of the work yourself, then 205's cost buttons to run.

That's why I've gone the diesel turbo route 205. I've got 170+bhp available (turned down to 150 for insurance purposes) and all I've essentially done is fitted a £60 turbo to a £140 1.9 DT engine. Obviously I've spent more ect on little bits and bobs but doing thing yourself like Anthony says saves a hell of a lotta' money. I've worked out costs and even with all the money I've spent on my car it is still cheaper than maintaining a modern car through a garage. Plus I get a fun car to drive round in :D

I remember thinking the same when I did my Mi16 rebuild & conversion (2005?). It cost me loads, but when finished I had a practically rebuilt car (Rebuilt engine/suspension/brakes etc). Initially it was an everyday car, then reduced to annual Ring trips and back to everyday car again only until a year ago. Only major thing that went wrong was a bolt lodged in the cambelt, hence 10 bent valves. Oh, and an alternator.

The initial outlay is a lot, but spend wisely and it'll be returned with, hopefully, trouble free motoring for a few years. Just make sure you get a few back-up parts for spares when those troublesome moments do crop up (e.g. my alternator).

Well i had the clever idea of getting a Mi16 for my 205... so ive started to prep it now for a full respray, turned out both my inner wings are rotten i cant weld to save my life and have never tryed fortunately the rest of the car is spotless!

But im still short of a DTA & Loom, Full stainless and all the bits and bobs that broke coming off.. im along way off finishing, but keep telling myself i will have it ready for march, somehow i belive myself, stripping it is the cheap bit, building it back up is the expensive bit!

Nope, not a money pit but merely the responsibility and associated cost of owning, maintaining and keeping what is a wonderful classic drivers car on the UK roads.

I would not have it any other way and my biggest annoyance/frustration are those owners who cannot afford to look after a car properly but subject it to the worst cowboy bodge jobs instead or replacing the unit or using items that are completely sub standard when they MUST. I have seen some bad horrors in my time and no doubt others on here will have as well?

This. I really can't see why people think otherwise when comparitively they are sillycheap to run & maintain, a lot of other stuff really can't compete, i'm talking relative to a recent thread where people were suggesting other cars etc, M3's etc etc, that is bollocks, all things considered.

my 205 owes me in the region of £12-15k not adding 4 years of labour of my own and its curently a shell on the drive and a collection of shiny parts filling my shed, garage and bedroom

a more accurate title would be cars = money pit, it doesn't matter what you own it will eat a large sum of your money using and maintaining it

i tend to think of things in these terms.

if you love a car you will do your best to keep it in good order and how you want it no matter what the cost as funds allow.

but it doesnt really matter what brand floats your boat , cars are always going to cost money either in fuel insurance consumables ( tyres , brakes , oil , filters etc ) and if you want to keep a car looking at its best then you have paint laquer filler abrasives etc and rust proofing and thats if you do the work yourself so a lot more if you farm the work out to the pros!

then you have upgrades or modifications and engine swaps if you are that way inclined.

so in conclusion all cars are money pits whether new ( you can add instant depreciation in to that case! ) or old and it just depends on whether you love your car enough to keep it or not!

as an aside older peugeots are much better built than a lot of their comparable cars from other brands :)

just look at the hot hatches from fiat ford and vauxhall from the same era and you will notice that apart from volkswagen peugeots have survived in pretty good numbers compared to others showing that the rust proofing from new worked well.

but as no car is ever built to last longer than 10 years or so after 20 years any car is going to need a little tlc to keep it in good condition.

my only hope is that as time goes on enthusiast owned and well kept examples of any car will contiue to appreciate in value reflecting not only the rarity of such a car but also the effort time and considerable funds that it has taken to make and keep a car in such a condition!
