Private Plates

Recommended Posts

sander swinkels

Hi guys,

I bought a 206 GTI 180 in the UK last weekend.. Drove it home to the netherlands.. Now it has private plates, that's what us is told..

The guy at the rental-car-service told us that they were worth a few pound..

I'm searching for information, how to sell them.. What do I need if I want to sell them? Where can I sell them? And how much is it worth..

The plates are : "M 19 ADA"

And if I want to sell the car, without importing it into the Netherlands.. Do I have to sell it with plates? Or can I sell it without plates?

Anyone who can help me with this??

Thanks.

Sander

my sister in law has a private plate for sale with one of the companies in the back of the papers, sorry can't remember which one

they take quite a cut but make you more likely to get a sale.

trouble is she's asking too much and won't drop the price so it's not sold.

essentially if you want to keep the plate and sell it on you would have to put it on retention (assuming you weren't selling it straight away)

Retaining a registration number

If you’re the registered keeper of a vehicle, you can apply to remove a registration number from the vehicle and hold it on a retention document (V778) for 1, 2 or 3 years.

You can retain the registration number in your name or someone else’s name. This costs:

£105 for 1 year

£130 for 2 years

£155 for 3 years

You’ll need the retention document when you want to assign the number to a vehicle again.

Then when you sell it you can transfer it to someones else and they pay £80 to put it on their car.

When you put the plate on retention your car will be assigned a new reg i believe (or maybe the original one i'm not sure)

There is some more information here you may find useful...

Best of luck.

M@tt, by any chance would you happen to know if I could keep my private plate on retention for a 2nd year by paying the difference, ie £25 or if it would it have to be a full £105 again??

once you have the plate on retention its £25 every year to keep it on retention. the retention includes the transfer fee so in theory it does not cost you anything when you are ready to put it on a car.

i have just put mine onto my omega shed as the £25 was due.

to the op, i wouldnt bother trying to keep that plate as its worthless unless you find someone with those initials. i had a vts plate on a xsara and put it up for £100 and no one wanted it so i left it on the car when i scrapped it.

Below is the back of the V778 (Retention certificate) all the info is on there...it is a minefield of odd complexity.

Yup, far cheaper to just transfer it to another car.

I deal with private plates daily. They are actually simple when you are used to them.

If you need any help shout.

However, it is a plate that's not worth a great deal so I would not worry.

I sold my pug other month and i put my private plate on retention for the year. I got assigned the original reg back to my car. I thought it was £105 every year to keep it on retention.

I have my reg for sale G20 PUG if anyone interested too haha.
