Converting A Base Modei

Recommended Posts

i am pretty hacked off with my gti shells as both are pretty rotten in various places, mainly due to the sunroof and the gti kit letting water in imho,i have all the bits sitting to build a good gti6 based car,so i am thinking of just buying a mega low miles base model late car,now are the only differences bodyshell wise the shape of the rear arches or do gti's have extra strengthening anywhere ? if i cut back the arches and fit rallye arches will that give me the same clearance for wheels ? i know some of the earlier cars had different engine mounting points are there any like this phase 2 ?

If your going to strip a phase 1.5 or 2 base model shell right back then the only differences will be the rear arch shape as you've mentioned. Have a look through the project pages. There are quite a few rallye/xs/gt projects and a few with XU engines too.

To use gti suspension you will need to move the clips that hold the brake lines on the front inner arches I believe. I had to on my base diesel when I fitted 1.9 suspension.
