3/4 Vent Leak

Recommended Posts

ScoobyJawa

Got a leak on both sides coming through the 3/4 vents in the bottom of the panel.

I've read elsewhere likely to be the rear window seals (which have shrunk a bit), and that you can take them off and stretch them back out, is that true?

Anywhere else it might be coming from? And how easy is it to get the plastic panel off?

Thanks :)

Blimey, I've had this too. In my case, the water appeared to trickle onto the "door card" panel armrest/ashtray bit, then would slowly trickle around and down and onto the carpet.

I tried to stretch the window seals, but didn't have much luck. I've used butyl tape (a lot of the car is butyl tape now I feel) which seems to hold. Worse comes to worse, I have some fixed windows.

If you're talking about the "door card" panels, there's a screw behind where the seat belt is, but other than that, if you have some trim removal tools its relatively ok, though I pretty much destroyed all the plastic clips in the process.

Some people mention the rear quarter badges could possibly let water in? Yup, butyl tape there for me too.

The seal stretching technique in warm water worked for me on my passenger side rear window, as it was letting a fair bit of water through in normal rain, but now only lets in any water if it's a torrential type of downpour :)

tried this method , of stretching after heating in hot water . didn't help much , only made the seals fit better on the window.

the problem i have now , is to stick back the 2 seals (they are glued to each other) back together

by the way , i came to a conclusion . on winter , i use the seals of the doors! which i have a spare , that was cut to the measure of quarter windows , and use them. they hold any amount of water out . it only looks bit puffy and "fat" but i don't have a problem with it ,any way , the windows on winter don't get opened much

Thanks for the comments chaps, had the windows out and took the seals out and into hot water. Cleaned everything up and tried stretching a bit, defo fit back on better. Also applied some Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber Care before refixing the windows to make a good seal and help keep supple. Time will tell (or at least wait until it rains!) if its worked!!

I've had the glue on the wheel arch leak water thou, Builds up and blocks the drain hole which it sounds like as water alone should drain out or it would have rusted out by now

Its definitely coming in via the windows now lol - made slightly worse by taking them out - don't make a firm seal now lol!! Will have to do it again!

If it's still leaking and nothing else is helping, the bodge I did was with some butyl tape, I just typed in 'butyl tape car' or similar on eBay, ~£15

Took the seal off and then put the butyl tape around the car metal frame where the seal attaches to, then pressed with the seal over the butyl tape. It was quite an effort to get them on with the butyl tape, which to me felt like it would be making a decent waterproof seal.

I'm sure with some effort it could be made to be unnoticeable, but in my case:

There's bits of the tape visible, and the seals aren't pushed in fully either. So far, it doesn't appear to let water through (hose and some rain), but I think this won't be permanent so as long as it survives the winter, I'll be happy until I try the other methods, cutting a piece from another seal and glueing together appearing to be one of the best solutions thus far.

I suspect removing the seals with the tape now there is going to be just as tough as getting it on in the first place, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I'm as eager as you are for any other alternative solutions!

I think I may have mixed them up when I took them off - though it doesn't look like they are LH or RH, pretty much idential when they were together.

I took them off, swapped them round and also adjusted the window up to the highest it can go and so far it seems to be ok.

But yeah I do think that tape will be the next step if it still leaks, its another layer to help waterproof!
