Numpty Question

Recommended Posts

There was a lot of steam coming from the front right of my car the other day. I opened the bonnet and there was a lot of fluid - coolant I guess, all over the engine bay. Coolant tank is empty and when I tried to start the car this morning it wouldn't start. I've checked the spark plugs and they are grand except for a bit of oil in the first one.

I'm no mechanic what so ever but my father in law reckons the head gasket has gone. Car has 104k on the clock and is in what I thought, tip top condition. Is he right?

Cheers!

Head gasket or possibly broken water pipe.

Could be a split hose that has soaked the distributor cap. Clean up inside the cap and refil the cooling system with water and see if it starts up then.

If I fill up the coolant and get the car started, would I be doing much more damage to the car if I drove it 1½ miles to my mechanic?

depends how bad it is, did it chuck the water out after you turned the engine off?

Say that, the rule of thumb is, if it breaks fix it before you try to drive it.. id imagen so long as it doesnt over heat you will be fine.

Looking at your signature I would personally attach 205 to XC90 with a length of rope and tow it down to your mechanic, only 1 1/2 miles but if you can tow it.

My car is in my drive which is on a slope so it would be difficult to get the car out unfortunately.
