Gti-6 Running Problems

Oh, and you say that you haven't removed the ICV, but have sprayed WD40 on it. You need to remove it and spray WD40 around the back of the plunger where the shaft goes into the motor.

Mei, I seem to remember that there's a bunch of live wires that are soldered together during a conversion and that one powers up the ICV. If it's missed then the ICV will of course be dead. I'm sure CosKev had it. Let me see if I can find the thread.

I never did any of that with my loom

Hmm, found his thread but didn't say how he fixed it.

It was a Spiky modified loom at the time.

I had a problem with my spiky modified loom, he had adapted it as per 306 loom but mine was a xsara loom, there was a missing 12v feed to the double relay. This caused no power to the iacv, test the wires with the ignition on and you should have 2x12v and 2xearth.

So an ecu power fault rather than specifially the icv.

Pin 2 was missing its power on the double relay, this feeds power to the ecu which in turn feeds the iacv, check pin 2, you should have 12v.

i removed the ICV and cleaned it with wd40,also the engine runs with the plug for the icv disconected

That's because you have set it at just the right distance out to allow the right amount of air through, have you checked the voltage at the plug?

no havent checked voltage yet

I cannot see how that can be the case Huw as all 4 wires are direct connections to the ecu and no other components, power source or earth.

He is correct, sort of.

On Xsara looms, there is an additional wire that needs switched 12v that isn't immediately obvious - it's (mis?)labelled as something like airbag on the wiring diagram if I remember correctly, hence it gets overlooked. If this isn't connected when the loom is connected, then the ICV doesn't have 12v and thus doesn't work, although the car still otherwise starts and runs fine which you wouldn't expect with one of the switched lives missing.

That said, that conversion is sounding more and more like a lash-up and I would personally be going over the whole thing with a fine tooth comb to see what else is wrong. I mean, if the easy bits have been done wrong, what about the more difficult bits...

As for carbs, they're a backward step (IMO at least) on a modern engine / management like a GTi-6. They'll work, sure, but only in the same way as washing your clothes in a mangle rather than using a washing machine.

ok will look into this, and yes it does seam bit of a lash-up :( this is why im realy thinking of droping the mi16 engine i have anyway in with the carbs which too i already have, its so hard when you havent done the convertion yourself nore know the person who did it or im my case tryed to do it lol, im thinking a mi16 with carbs i can do away with all the poor wireing and surely a mi16 with carbs will make more power than the standard gti-6 i already have.

You may be worth either pulling the loom off and starting again, or getting another loom and converting it yourself?

Oh funk. Looks like I have the same problem.

Just went out to get voltages across plug, two earths and two at 5ish volts. Also the fuel pump runs past prime and keeps going.

Looks like I missed the switched live that glenwah speaks of.

Any clues on what wire?

Your fuel pump will prime for ages when the ECU has reset itself

Yup

Well, I have only ran it for 1 second due to no exhaust and VERY loud!

If it was not the stupid wife's birthday, I'd go and weld up an exhaust and try and get it running properly. Looks like it'll have to wait till Monday.

My fuel pump ran constantly when I didn't have a constant live to pin 2 on relay.

Problem solved.

I spliced pin 2 (BB1) to pin 8 (BB2B) from the big relay plug.

12v is now at the ICV and no constant fuel pump
