1.6 Gti Cv Joint Boots Diy Replacement?

Recommended Posts

Chile

Is it possible to DIY change the boots (inner and outer) on the 1.6 driveshafts? I've take the shafts of the car without much trouble but I then read on Haynes that I need to take the shafts to aspecialist. BTW I don't want to use the stretchy boots.

Cheers

yes its quite easy though a bit convoluted with 1.6 type shafts as the outboard joint cannot be separated, you have to remove the inner joint and the tripod to slide the outer boot down the shaft.

Thanks WP,

Does the tripod end of the shaft slides out of the inner joint by just removing the boot?

yes, and then you need to knock it off the shaft, it'll either have a few splines peened over or a Circlip, mark the tripod in reference to the shaft so it goes back on in the right place :)
