Cheers mate, that's a great price. Is it fully comp?

Gives me slightly more confidence of getting decent insurance reasonably soon!

Don't know how but I got insured on a 1.6 gti at the age of 18 for £1600 TPFT

Adrian flux were going to renew my policy for £1080 but got them to match the quote of greenlight insurance and they did it for cheaper, £590 in total. Fully comp, all mods declared and can drive other cars third party. Win! 24 years old now.

Also I've lent Ryanstdt my 1.8 derv, rang up direct line to get him insured for a month. £16.90 in total. Another win!

A sign of getting old though.

I don't live too far away from the A38.

I wish my insurance was that cheap :( I suppose best thing to do is check comparison sites, and then when I have my no claims ring around as many places as I can. Fingers crossed!!

Similar price for me iirc, but that was 10 or so years ago!

Really confusing, I had my 205 1.6 at 18 and cost me £1,200 with 1year ncb TPFT 4 years ago. I swear Quin Direct had problems with their rates and quoting system as I was also allowed to drive other vehicles!

And now 22 years old 205 1.9 with TB's is costing me £1,000, 5 years

ncb TPFT with Sky.

Did try to get a quote for a mate who is 18 and is impossible to get it under £2,500. I know young people are a 'higher risk' but....really?

Sit down when you have the chance, open the yellow pages, start at the first instance company you find and work your way through them all with a note pad!!

My first insured car was while I was still on a provisional license, Opel Manta B 1800 auto. (God I loved that car) it cost me £750 at the age of 19. 11 years ago (where did that go?) but still very cheap... Nearest quote to that was over double!!

Takes some time, but worth doing!!

last time i did a couple of quotes on comparison sites, within 20 minutes i was having phone call after phone call from what seemed like hundreds of insurers trying to 'see if they could give me a better quote'. none of them managed to!

I wouldnt bother with Comparison sites.... they are rip of marchants themselfs, you get a quote from them, ring the insurer up direct and the insurance quote will be 10-20% cheaper.

That's not too bad then, are they expensive? Or are they just as much as a lot of other cars out there?

I'm not going to bother reading through all the replies here. But look, the danger with this type of topic - and this happens every time - is that everyone will start posting up what they are currently paying, or what they paid ten years ago when they were your age. Waste of time. Nobody on here, not one single person, is going to have the exact same circumstances as you. There are so many variables in insurance quotes that there's not much point listening to anyone that tells you they are getting a super fandabbydozy deal from xyz insurer, as you could phone that same insurer and be offered a really crap quote.

There's 2 simple things you've got to accept in this scenario

1 - At your age with no NCB, you are going to get bent over. End of. The only way you can minimise the pain is to shop around (see point 2) or minimise the risk by driving a crap car

2 - Shop around. Yes, it's a hassle. Yes it takes ages. But you've got to do it. Asking about the differences between FC, TPFT, TP only insurance is going to depend on what cover YOU want and what benefit (protection) YOU see from it. Then you have to look at what difference it's going to make to YOUR quotes (FC is sometimes cheaper than TFPT or TP only, strangely enough).

You only need to search on here, or Google, or pick up a car mag in the shops and look in the back pages, and you will have plenty of potential insurers to contact. We can all speak from experience of what good/bad experiences we've had with certain insurers, and that may influence your decision, but I think at your age, with price being the biggest factor, you are likely to want to go with the cheapest quote you get rather than worry becuase some people (like myself) don't rate (for example) Adrian Flux any more. But as I said, the only way you can make a decision is to shop around yourself, as what Joe Bloggs is paying on his insurance means absolutely sweet FA to what you might be paying!

I'd also add that I do see a value in using comparrison sites. I've done it myself and am quite happy with the experience.

It's a quick and relatively easy way to get a lot of quotes at the outset, so at least you know where you are starting from, and have a ball-park figure that you can then start to chip away at by haggling with companies directly. Yes, you will get phones calls and emails as result of this, but you can always just ignore them! I've never been flooded by them.

Using some comparison sites damages your credit rating though.

I'd like to see some actual proof that that is true. I find it very hard to believe considering that using price comparrison sites is very much a normal activity for a large percentage of the population these days. It's also somewhat subjective as to what actually "damages" a person's credit rating - for example having a traceable record of credit from having loans, credit cards and phone contracts over the years is (I believe) more beneficial than having no credit history at all, so long as you haven't defualted on anything or made late payments etc. Not at all relevant to this discussion but adds some context to my opinion.

Thanks for the great detailed reply. Just want to say though that I didn't start this topic to get a price, I was just wondering what the chances are of getting an affordable quote by knowing what others got recently.

I've been quoted up to 18 grand (which is crazy!) and was just making sure that I wasn't going to purchase this car and no get any quotes below 10 grand or something. Just a bit of research really from other 205 owners to get a rough idea.

I appreciate your comments and will be shopping around as much as possible, no matter how long it takes I do realise that it is worth it.

Cheers

Oh I do appreciate that you weren't expecting this topic to be your own price comparisson tool, but I've seen enough insurance topics to know that they always go the same way. It's one of those subjects where getting examples from other people doesn't really have any relevance to your own situation.

What you need is guidance on how to get the best deal, NOT examples of everyone else's best deal.

It's been a long time since I was in your situation (hence why I haven't bothered to tell you what I paid on my first car 15 years ago, because it's redundant information) so I'm not up to date on all the latest "schemes" but have you looked in to any of those policies where they make you have a "black box" or camera in the car etc? I know many people aren't keen on the "big brother" approach but at least it might make you drive a bit more sensibly if you know you're going to be bang to rights if you have an accident.

It actually is surprisingly! It is with some as they're effectively quoting a loan for monthly repayments. Mortgage brokers gets refusals all the time on people with otherwise perfect credit because of it!
