Air Intake Tube/hose 2.0 Turbo Engine

Recommended Posts

Anton green

I'm sorting the various hoses/tubes at the moment in the engine bay. Should hopefully have her fired up in the next couple of weeks(depending on time available:-)).

Question is: What's the general consensus on using flexible reinforced tubing to run from the compressor inlet to the air filter? -This would be a much easier way to run filtered air around a crowded engine bay trying to use fixed radius tubing, surely?? any downsides I'm probably missing, like longevity?

It will work, like you say won't last forever but it's cheap enough to replace when required. Just make sure it is reinforced as you don't want to to suck flat, I have heard of this happening as the old windmill will be gobbling a LOT of air at high revs/boost.

You would probably do best having the air filter nearer the turbo and ducting air to it to reduce the chances of it sucking flat. IIRC you need 50mm diameter pipes from the turbo inlet. I think you could use household plastic soil pipe on this if you really wanted! The inlet on a turbo is not so much of a tuned length as it is on a normally aspirated car.

Yes Henry, I'm thinking of mounting the filter as close to the offside strut tower as possible -so a fairly short distance in the grand scheme of things, just there are things around the area which make it crowded and torturous. I may look into a different top engine mount to see if I can make a little more space around the master cylinder / cam belt cover area. Will have to see how it goes. Tom, good call, I don't fancy anything none reinforced in the engine bay really, I like things to last and not be consumable if I can help it.

I've got to say it mate, the soil pipe sounds creative -but ultimately a bit sh1t ;)

I like the idea of taking the car to a pipe bender somewhere and having a one piece aly tube bent up. I haven't finished thinking through my options yet though and I don't know how feasible a one-piece will be, It might just be a pipe dream..

The standard turbo inlet is 2.5" which is 63mm. Ideally it wants to be this size to the filter. I think having one piece mandrel bent will end up very expensive, a cheaper way is lobsterback welded joints to make the bends, see Bim's 205 TT as I did the intake pipework on his car.

I've had a search for Bim but cant find the member on the site, would you have a link please Mr Fenton?

How's your conversion running Henry? I haven't seen you around in a long time now? Good I hope ^_^

That's a pretty neat intake Dave

Is that a standard 90o silicone hose you have coming up from the turbo inlet, or is it long so it can get some extra height to clear the cam cover and the engine mount surround? It is an alloy bend? right?

Cheers. :D

Cheers :)

The hose coming up from the turbo is one of the standard ones but cut a bit to suit, and then some 2.5" s/s 90degree dairy elbows cut down to suit. I polished it up after aswell.

Hmm, the induction pipework is probably the only pipework I don't actually have -so buying parts to modify them to clone your idea doesn't quite make it to the top of my list for the time being.

Some good ideas here though as always.

I have seen a 'modular' universal alloy induction pipe on a popular auction site for a reasonable sum which if it doesn't appear suitable when it arrives I can always re-list and not lose out an extortionate amount -so there is a good chance I will go for that for now and re-evaluate my choice after unboxing it. If it turns out to be a bespoke-fitting-custom-godsend I'll post it up on the forum for people.

Mine was made and has worked fine for years but for some unexplained reason, a "Peugeot Tuner" put a huge kink in it with a vice before fitting it!!!! You can't see the flattened bit on this pic, but it really needs cutting out

*Tom was right on the sizes. I need 50mm diameter to replace my squashed bit as it is flared at either end.

That's a nice inlet pipe you have there, thanks for the pic H

I reckon I'll be getting something durable in place for the time being, then I can look into a one piece shiny ali pipe affair after I have all the other little bits completed.
