Top Hat Shims /valve Cap Shims.

Does anyone know a decent supplier of these in the UK? Ive found a site in USA that lists them by stem diamterer and shim thickness. In UK Ive only found listings for triumph, rover and talbot stuff. Nothing of suitable size. Looking for 7mm stems (XU10 inlet valves) and some 1.5 and 2.0 shims.

Its for Chris's car, it had a petert stage 2 cam which came out of my engine when I broke the car. Sadly in his head it rattles the lifters something chronic as the base diameter is too short in a standard head, likewise it loses lift in the standard head. I had given my head over to a machine shop and had it reworked. For now we have stuck a standard cam in to quieten the engine and regain some intake air. Would be nice to make use of the cam.

Why not use the shims available from Peugeot that fit under the follower or aren't they suitable?

Graham I wasn't aware of any from Peugeot, do you have any further info on these?

Peter, reading back through posts etc about the stage 2 cam. Do you reccomend the 1.5mm shim? Sure I read somewhere that's what you use? If I can't source these locally could you get some over to me if I paid? Thanks.

Peugeot have a massive list of shims for the XU heads ranging from 1.6mm - 4.90mm.

See attached file for part numbers, they were getting pricey last time i ordered some & its rare you can get them in singles.

Excellent thanks. Can I just confirm these are suitable for use under the standard hydraulic lifter? In the 16v heads.

I'm talking about something that looks like this. It sits on top of the valve. What are you guys talking about?

They need to be 6mm, approx. 1.25mm thick.

That's what I'm talking about peter. Not sure what the Peugeot ones are. Hopefully graham can confirm. If not I will go to Peugeot and try get a diagram / picture.

Found a diagram of the part numbers graham has listed. they are the standard flat shims found in the 8v heads, not the pocketed shims as pictured above by peter.

PS Peter Im sure they should be 7mm, I thought the 6mm were the gti6 engine ? Maybe I have it the wrong way around.

edit just re-read the original pst and I didnt make it clear, its the XU10J4R engine, Not the RS.

I think you'll find both R and RS have 6mm stems. I'll send him a valve, retainer and collets to make sure they're perfect.

if you could get me a quote that would be great. Im trying to confirm exactly which cam this is, I know I ordered it as a stage 2, markings on the end dont seem to tally with your website.

Its says

030

1.7H54

1316 (possibly a b not a 6 on the end)

Can you confirm which cam this is?

My crude measurements give me 1.9mm smaller base diamter and roughly 2.8mm max lift in comparison to a standard cam. Would like to see it get the maximum poossible lift and duration if I'm refitting it.

None of that makes any sense to me. Try looking for three numbers and a letter on one end, eg 426B

Early J4R's were 7mm stems and later ones (and majority) 6mm AFAIK, which is probably where the confusion comes from.

Will have to measure them with the cam out to be 100% before ordering. The company peter mentioned quoted 169 aud. Could probably buy a cam for that ! Someone must know a UK company?

That 169 is 16 shims , 2 sets of 8 at different sizes.

OK, after a bit of cleaning up, its a 426A which I see on your website. If you can get me a price on suitable shims for this shipped toUK that would be fantastic.

That grind should never have gone on that cam. I can see why it rattles. I'll help you out with expenses.

Any help is appreciated, I see on the website that grind is for the mi16/s16. Probably explains why I get such big differences in basic measurements. Can u work out what is needed please and get back to me.

Ah, yes the shims I posted the numbers of are for the standard 8v shims, as you already realised in your original post you didn't mention they were for a 16v engine which usually have hydraulic followers that set the clearance themselves & don't use any form of shim like those in the 8v engines.
