Protected No Claims Bonus

Recommended Posts

Henry Yorke

The wife got shafted by Tesco on her last insurance as she automatically let it renew. Having a shop around, we can get it for £400 with protected NCB, however it is £46 cheaper if you take off the protected NCB. She has 9 years NCB. Is the protection actually worth anything or just a bit of a scam to get more money out of you?

is it not there just encase you have to make a claim due to uninsured drivers or anything. So if you claim you won't get a massive hike in monthly payments

well thats how i understand it anyway

when i finally can protect mine i will be doing it

My wifes on my insurance policy and reversed her discovery into a new shape mini at the beginning of the year. The insurance still went up a lot even with protected no claims.

The guy on the phone said something along the lines of this. The base insurance premium is calculated irrespective of the no claims discount, the protected no claims means you can discount the new mega expensive rate by the full 50% instead of 30% if the no claims wasnt protected for 1 accident. My insurance policy went up nearly a grand this year from last year for different reasons, if the no claims wern't protected it would have been around £400 ontop of the increased premium this year. To protect the no claims last year was around £60 so money well spent.

Thank you wifey

Henry, it is a must just in case you have an off day or have a collision on a roundabout or country lane that are most likely judged as 50/50 split liability claims (without witness evidence anyway).

Without it, you will see your hard-earned NCD plummet after 1 incident where you are either held at fault or partially responsible.

To buy the claim back to protect your NCD will cost significantly more than £46!

Always a no brainer for me.

Personally, I think it's worth it. But everyone's insurance is different becuase everyone has different circumstances, so it's a very personal decision. It's up to the indivudual to make that cost comparrison and decide if they can justify the extra price and if it's worth it.

It is after all just another form of insurance. So just as you would shop around for the best deal, and you would make a decision whether to take the cheapest, lowest form of cover or pay extra for better cover, the same goes for protected NCB.

Have always had it and when the wife reversed into a post in a car park it was well worth it! :)

I have always protected my no claims, and have found it to have added approximately £25 to £30 per year, this is insuring various peugeot cars and Discoveries. Personally I think it has been worth every penny, however the easiest way to tell is to see what the difference in policey amount would be taking off some of the NCD when getting a quote from say a comparrision website. Ultimately it is all a gamble!

have it henry. in the event you have a claim then the loading on your policy will be a lot less had you not protected it. the good thing about a tesco policy is that its underwritten by ageas insurance (formally fortis) who are the most easy going insurer i've ever worked for. they say yes to virtually anything in the event of a claim.

Thanks people. I have always had it, but was just wondering if it still made a difference in this day and age or just another product of our lovely "Financial Services Industry" who are selling you insurance on insurance!!
