4Wd 406 Has It Been Done?

Recommended Posts

Richie-Van-GTi

Just wondering has anyone attempted to make a 406 4wd using mi16x4 gear? I fancy a new project but keep it a useable family car afterwards. Maybe a 200bhp xu10 motor?

406 is so aweful to drive compared to a 405. Dead? You'd blow transfer case up anyway, if you could make a tunnel in the shell.

My thought was Subaru but as above why build a 200bhp 4x4 saloon car when you can go and buy one?

Why build a 1.6 turbo 200bhp hot hatch when you can go and buy one!?

Because it is an iconic hatchback and so in my eyes worth the effort, can't really say the same about a 406 though.

Maybe because its either not been done before or the fact its not a Peugeot or budget.

Not following the sheep is over rated imo, making what you want is more important than just doing something different from everyone else, eventually other cars will do the same, then your part of the sheep eventually.

It would be a wide car and think you should go for it once you know you can do it.

For the OP, maybe he thinks its worth it to him.

Ive had a scooby even though I prefer the evo  , I want something different now. As said I want a project. Another 205 is possibly on the agenda but my other half hates them  , hence I fancy doing a family saloon thats slightly different to the rest. Ive drove loads of 406's and quite like them in terms of being a nice smooth reliable car, also I want to try and get 200+bhp with aircon, PAS and hopefully something with cruise control. I thought why not go 4wd at the same time. really set it apart from other 406's and mean I have something practical in winter and for towing a future 205 around :P

Also not to be pedantic but this thread wasnt a why do it thread. I was asking iof its been done before and if anyone knows of any major reasons why it couldnt be done. Petert raised an issue there about transfer boxes, are these known to be a weak link or at what point do they become weak, IE 20% more power than standard etc?

i think its a great idea and dont think its ever been done[maybe theres a reason it hasnt] .it seams to be common knowledge that the transfer box is a weak link in the system

hmm, didnt know that about the transfer box. Seems a shame as there are some big power 4x4 mi16's out there. I remember ecosse having one. Wonder if there are upgrades available for it?.

I'm fairly sure there's a guy on here using EVO running gear, using a hybrid Peugeot bellhousing Mitsubishi gearbox in a 405? Might be worth looking at his thread?

Sorry, I didn't mean it be a philosophical discussion, but I went for a run in a Tommi Makinen evo recently. It's owned by a guy who owns half of this: http://www.mwignitions.com/# and all of this: http://www.gtpumps.com.au/main.html. It's been stroked from 2.0L and 2.3L, plus a few other internal mods and makes 385kW at the wheels. I think that's approx 600hp at the flywheel, before 4wd driveline losses. Yet you can take it shopping. So civil, yet so fast when desired, for minimal effort and dollars.

I'm currently restoring an Mi16x4. You can buy upgraded drive line parts from here: http://www.atdperformance.com/topic/index-en.html

However, even if you did get the urge to continue, there would have to be significant body work done to fit the Mi16x4 parts. Did you know that an Mi16 and Mi16x4 shell are completely different? Would you use the hydraulic self leveling suspension or fit coil overs?

Already been done by a bloke in France, have a look on the 406coupeclub forum.

According to Ashford Motorsport in Dover, they made a 4x4 coupe before... But then they have apparently done all sorts of stuff, much of which smells like it came out the back end of a bull!!

Use the coupe!! In my opinion it is iconic!! Beautiful looking car that still doesn't look overly dated!! And they don't handle that bad with a little lowering!! Never spun moe when I had it... Back end out almost as easily as the gti, and SO comfortable!!!
