206 Gti 180

if you must get a 206, just get a standard gti one. if your stripping it then no point getting the 180, as ur just paying extra for the seats and 17 inch rims.

the 138 can be had for £500 and is far more tunable.

There was quite a big discussion on this in the EW engine thread and this only really applies if you plan on doing a lot of custom head work like Sandy does. I don't think people should bounce this idea around too much as it implies that you can tune the 138 engine beyond the 180 with only minor mods and that simply isn't true. It's more responsive to mods, as the 180 engine is quite highly tuned as it is, but that doesn't mean that for the same money as buying a 180 you could buy and tune a 138 beyond it.

By all means buy the 138 car as a base then do an engine conversion, but with the money you'd probably end up spending you may as well have bought a 180 in the first place - the same applies to tuning a 138 to the same level.

Spot on Cameron, given it'll be a road rally car you can't have ITB's which is the first thing you can do to a 138 to get near 180 power.

Also to get a 138 for £500 it'll be a rusty old dog, 180's are a fair bit newer.

Hi Welshpug, this project won't be a Road Rally car mate.

This is going to be a Sprint/Track Day Car, albeit a slow build.

:)

chap i work with got a 206 gti 138 for £500. and its a damn good car :) so, it can be done but buyer beware really.

and yes you might have to throw big money and time to get good results from the 138, but, it remains more tunable :P just got to have deep pockets
