206 Gti 180

I've always liked them since I had a spin in one a couple of years ago.

I've been thinking of buying one to convert it into a Sprint/Track car.

I just wanted to canvas opinion to see if it would be a good option, seeing as it has a fair few BHP and are not bad money wise to buy.

Any advice would be appreciated!

:)

I had one for a few months this year but it didn't float my boat, I didn't like the seating position, they should have put reach adjustment on the column but others might not need it.

The ride is shocking not helped by having 205/40/17 tyres on and felt very poorly put together.

I would say they are cheap for a reason.

Hi mate, would you consider buying one to strip down and use it purely as a toy?

I'd have no intention of using it on the road at all.

Possibly, the engines have good potential and I'm sure you could sort the suspension out and maybe even the steering column position.

It would most likely drive alot better on 15in wheels.

I decided to sell it a get my 205 up and running instead though.

Buy a clio 182, much better car.

rear beams seem to be the weak point mechanically, they're an upscaled version of the 106 beam so have a pair of bearings close together.

in the 180, there's a few things to get around for rallying, namely the wiring, multiplex, and the throttle operation, its FBW.

engine and box are good though, probably a bit tall geared for lanes.

As a standard car, debatable, they have many issues, yes they handle ok.

EW wins hands down for torque and tuneability.

Would the FBW throttle be OK for Sprints, and how reliable is the FBW system?

That's what it's primary role would be.

Not a big fan of Renault, although I don't mind the new range of RS models.

I was chatting to a guy a few weeks ago at the Ring who runs a GTi 180 as a track car. It was essentially a standard 180 but with R888s fitted and he was lapping in the 8:40s.

I desipise the 206 in all forms but esp the gti180.. dont make anywhere near 180hp and are bags of s*it that fall to peices.. id rather drive a s*itlet.

Get a phase 1 172.

Slower than a xsara VTS in my experience....and thats uphill from 40 to about 120. (private road of course!)

...oh, and slower than my old 306 mi16, whereas a clio 172 cup was more or less a direct match for the 306 in a straight line.

I would also take the clio(or a xsara vts) over a 206 every single time!

I'v driven a 172 cup and would say it was considerably quicker than my 306 gti.

Just a shame clio's look like they were designed for dale winton...

Ahh, std gibbo response.

None of that matters as its all going to be stripped out :P

Many early ones didnt make 180ps indeed, two reasons, took a while to free up, and required an ecu update, this was documented by Magic on the aussiefrogs forum but they had a server fail so i can't find the thread any more.

The same thread detailed the impressive midrange gains to be had with a map.

I went to buy one brand new from a dealer when they were released, but they didn't sell them in white over here so I decided not to get one in the end.

True story.

they did make white ones, two infact IIRC!

Didn't stop the Civic Type R lovers, have seen several white ones of those and they didn't make them in that colour here....

Yeah that was bulls*it with the ep3.. They made the jdm models in Swindon in champ white with lsd's and aircon as standard and exported them but we get stuck with lame models :(

Thank you for your input gents.

I've decided to sell the XS (not an easy decision) and start a new GTi 180 Project from the ground up.
