How Much Information Is In The Vin Number

Recommended Posts

Can I get information like build date from the VIN number of my 205 to see if it matches the log book?

If I remember the V5 details correctly my car was built August 86, but its a 1.9 GTI ( I must hunt down the paperwork to confirm but it was made before the official release date)

Doing a VIN check online it comes up as a 1.9 so was wondering what other information is contained....

Pretty much everything as far as I'm aware.. body style, engine size, trim level, paint colour, all that stuff. Basically anything that distinguishes it from another possible variant in the same model range will be in there.

The build code is also on service box if you enter your VIN. A calculator is available online to determine the day of build from that 4 digit number, or enter a formula in Excel to work it out.

Generally:

VF3741C660 is an early 1.6 GTI

VF3741C860 is an early 1.9 GTI

VF3741B660 is an early 1.6 CTI

For 205s it's just body type, engine and gearbox
