Help, Wiper Problem

Recommended Posts

mikeamtrak

I Hope someone has come across this and can help me out?

My front windscreen washer is not working, when i pull stalk the wipers work but no motor, I have tested the washer motor (direct to battery) and it works fine, so i bought new stalk and exactly the same, so i cleaned contacts that connect to washer motor and now when it is connected and you pull the stalk, if you disconnect from washer motor the wipers work when you pull stalk????? I am stumped can someone help or is it just easier to run direct from battery but with switch to do manually , i am sure this will get through mot but not ideal???

poor earth or corroded terminals in the plug are most likely candidates given the wiper relay is triggered fine and the motor does work.

I have connected earth directly to battery and still the same, i have cut the connector off and wired directly to wire and still the same!!! doing my head in now

could still be that the relay is at fault, as the pump and wipers are different contacts within the relay. swop the relay for a known good one before buying anything else. or like welsh pug says bad earth or dodgy terminal terminations. If you have a mulitimeter check for voltage at the pump when you pull the stalk, if not get one you can pick em up cheep for doing simple car electrics and a haynes manual for the diagrams theres pdf's of them around if you have a quick look.

the only relay there is is for the motor, the washer is direct.

Check the connection between the fusebox and the washer pump.

Looking at the fusebox on the left hand side, there is a seven pin connector, pin 1 goes to the washer motor (it will have number 87 on the wire)

Have you checked your getting power (12v) to the pump?

Have you tried a different column stalk?

The micro switch can fail meaning the wipers will still work when you pull the stalk but not the washers.

If all the wiring is fine then try a different switch imo.

Hello all! My first post - so please go easy on me! wink.gif

I know this is an old post, but I see there didn't seem to be any resolution on it, and I have the exact same problem.

Wipers are fine, rear wash/wipe fine, but no wash/wipe from the front and no sound from the motor, so I just assumed it needed another. Off I went to eBay and bought one. However, it turns out it's NOT the motor, and in fact, it has turned up some very peculiar behaviour instead.

When I disconnect the wires from the washer motor, the wipe function of the wash/wipe action starts working again (sweeps back and forth 3 times). But when I plug it back in again - nothing: no wash OR wipe! As I said, the motor is fine (I tested the old and the new to a battery, no worries at all, and even powered it in situ, and it will pump water out of the jets too). But it seems bizarre that the wipe motion will work if disconnected from the washer motor, but when reconnected, there is zero life at all!

Anyone any ideas?

Cheers guys!

Garry

The plug and wiring for the motor is probably corroded, cut it back until you find bright shiny copper then splice new wire in using something like a solder sleeve. Don't be surprised if the wiring is dark and crispy/crumbly most of the way to the bulkhead!

You can test it by checking for voltage at the motor plug when the stalk is operated. Test it with and without the motor connected, chances are you will see battery voltage with nothing connected but once the motor is plugged in the voltage will drop a lot due to the resistance of the old wiring.
