Vts Pull Clutch On 205... Problems With Adjustment

Recommended Posts

EZ Tutty

Hi,

I've pretty much finished my VTS Conversion on my 205, however i used the VTS gearbox and kept with the pull type clutch.

I know most people convert to the push type, but a few people on here seem to use the pull clutch with no problems (i believe miles sometimes does this).

My car was originally a BE1, and i'm using a resonably new BE1 style cable, with a spacer on the threaded adjuster at the gearbox end to allow it to work.

However i can't seem to get the adjustment right, if i adjust it so the biting point is about 1/3 from the bottom of the pedal travel the clutch pedal sits about 4inches above the brake pedal at rest, and if set the pedals so the clutch pedal is about 0.5inch above the brake the biting point is on the deck (not really drivable)

It feels like theres almost too much stretch in the cable, as the first 1/4 of the travel is just taking up the slack, but from my understanding clutch cables end up too ridged not too stretchy.

Just wondering if anyone had any tips before i go trying other cables?

Paul

I've got a 306 DT engine box and pull paddle clutch in mine with the original cable from the 205. I've used a 2" spacer and it's been fine and sit's in the right position.

Praps try a BE3 cable if you can't find another solution.

2inch spacer  mines about 10mm lol

I assume your using a BE3 cable or something then?

Miles

Never do it that way (as I see my name), 2 reason's, 1st it's a bit of a lash up, 2nd it's a pain if anyone else services it, Found this out quite a few times now, So makes a quick job turn into a nightmare

My bad i thought i saw a post of yours about it a while ago... must be someone else.

I can't really see how it's a lash up though, a small spacer seems to do the job for most people and then it works just like it does on the pull clutch cars.... but each to there own.

EDIT... just found the post i thought was you... it wasn't lol.... but you commented further along, sorry!

the only way I can see it working reliably is to use a manual adjust pull type cable with the 205 BE3 type pedal end (not the earlier type, as they wont fit) from a ZX.

And a post 90 pedal, or a modified BE1 pedal, all theory BTW going from various parts I have used in the past on other cars but never actually bothered to do this as each one has been converted as Miles says.

To make it much simpler, you'd do much worse than to just fit a BE3 push arm and standard BE3 push type cable, you can get the crosshsaft and arm new on ebay for about £35 from neat auto's or £60 odd from a dealer, as was discussed not so long ago on here.

Cheers for the advice,

Others on here have had the pull setup working, so it's possible on a BE1 cable, i just can't find the exact details.

I'll stick at it for now, it's literally just the stretch in the cable thats holding me back.

Deffinetly not converting to a push clutch, got a brand new VTS Clutch fitted.... it is possible that the fact it's a new clutch isn't helping, once all the high spots have worn off the fricton plate the biting point should move higher which will be to my advantage.

Doesn't matter now...

I set the pedal travel to the spec in the haynes (140mm +/- mm), bedded the clutch in a little and the biting point has come good.

Happy days, all that is needed is a 5mm or so spacer :)

Good work. I might look into getting a BE1 cable then to reduce some of the spacing :P

lol, i think you'd need a BE1 clutch pedal too... so prolly not worth the hassle.
